Peter Hook stated in an interview w/ Bass Guitar Magazine that “One of the strange things is that having such a distinctive style doesn’t lend itself to much experimentation. I’m always looking to see if anyone could make a better guitar than the Yamaha BB1200S. They’ve never done it yet, to my mind."

In an article from Gibson.com Peter Hook tells Michael Leonard "The first bass I really invested in was a Gibson EB-0. I love the sound of Gibson basses, but I needed a double-octave scale for my style of playing. So I had to get a copy of an EB-2 made by [U.K. guitar maker] Chris Eccleshall."

Hook started out on a "terrible" EKO bass copy before moving to a "terrible" Rickenbacker bass copy. He experimented next with a Gibson EB-2 hollow body bass, but ultimately ditched it because of the medium neck – he required a double octave.

In a live 1984 performance of "Age Of Consent" by New Order, Peter Hook plays a custom Gibson EB-2D Hollowbody Bass. The instrument, seen at 4:35 in the YouTube video, features a classic Humbucker pickup in the neck position and incorporates active electronics from a Yamaha BB1200.
