Scott Ian's Gear
Scott Ian worked with Guitar Center to produce a signature “Among the Living,” guitar. This one, Jackson did a deal with Guitar Center, and they did 250 of these limited edition for like $699 bucks and I'm p;aying this one is an exact one,” Ian says at (3:20). “I actually bought this one at a Guitar Center in Philadelphia. Because the prototype one I have is at home and I felt like I should be playing this on tour and helping to promote it. I haven't even changed the pickup. This is just some weird Duncan design…”

Scott Ian plays a Randall Signature amp, the Scott Ian Nullifier. “That's a Randall signature amp that I built together with them and Dave Freedman out in LA…” Ian says at (12:43). “It's basically their modular series, which, strangely enough, they discontinued. They don't even do it anymore. So, you can't even get this anymore. But those are the modules that pop out of each channel. So basically design three modules, three channel amp. Channel one being my clean channel. I called it Malcolm because it's basically an ACDC tonish. I can get super super clean but I would use channel one if I was going for a more straight up rock sound. Channel 2 I call 1987, because basically they modeled that one off of my '80s JCM800s and my tone that I was running back then. Which you can get certainly a great heavy rock tone all the way up into metal if you're running a boost with it. And then channel three I call the Nuts because that's more of a modern gain channel and it's got all the gain you'll ever need. Sometimes I'll kick over to that. I'll kick over to that sometimes just for feedback or something. If I need a little more gain at the end of something.”

Ian’s amp setup was also very simple: ’82 Marshall JCM 800s with a TC Electronic Booster Distortion pedal that he only used as a boost to drive distortion on the amp. Benante used the same model TC Booster when playing and writing new songs, as well. This setup was used on the first S.O.D album along with a 1981 Gibson Flying V and a 1982 Jackson Randy Rhoads guitar.
At 0:20 in this video, Scott Ian says, "Usually I use this guy, the full sized one with the tone controls...which enables you to hone in on certain frequencies," about the Spark Booster.
While Ian would endorse ESP guitars during the Among period, in the studio he primarily used his ’82 custom made Jackson Rhoads model and an ’81 Gibson Flying V, both equipped with Seymour Duncan JB pickups

"I went to see AC/DC in Sydney AU on Feb 22 and got the full stage tour from Malcolm's tech Bison and their amp tech Rick (who builds Wizard Amps). I got to play one of Angus's SG's through one of his Wizard amps. It sounded amazing. I was so nervous I couldn't remember how to play half the AC/DC songs I know. Notice how high the strap is as well. It's Angus's! Oh, and AC/DC was incredible."

In this video Scott shows his rig. The 5150 EL34 can be seen behind him and he talks about it from 21:14 onwards. An essential part of the live rig, according to the 2022 guitarguitar interview
Yeah, the Bungle tone was the combination of both. I was gonna do that same thing on the tour we just did in the States, because for my live rig, I’m running two of the EVH III’s with the EL34s. So, two heads into two cabinets, that’s it.
