Suhr is an American manufacturer of electric guitars, bass guitars, amplifiers, effects pedals, and pickups, headquartered in Lake Elsinore, California. The company was founded in 1997 by luthier John Suhr and business partner Steve Smith. John Suhr began building guitars in 1974 and gained recognition in the 1980s through his collaboration with Rudy Pensa at Rudy's Music Stop in New York City, where the two created instruments under the Pensa-Suhr name — most famously a signature model for Mark Knopfler. Suhr went on to serve as Senior Master Builder at Fender's Custom Shop from 1995 to 1997 before striking out on his own.
Suhr's guitar lineup spans several distinct body styles, including the Classic S and Classic T (vintage-inspired single-cut and double-cut designs), the Modern (a high-performance superstrat with 24 frets), and the Aura (a set-neck, dual-humbucker design). The company also produces a range of tube amplifiers — including the Bella, Badger, and PT series — as well as custom-wound pickups and effects pedals covering overdrive, compression, modulation, and more. All instruments and electronics are designed and built in-house at their California facility.
Suhr has built a strong following among professional guitarists, with artists such as Scott Henderson, Guthrie Govan, Mike Landau, Doug Aldrich, Pete Thorn, Reb Beach, and Andy Wood among those associated with the brand. The company occupies a space between boutique custom shops and larger production manufacturers, offering both standard production models and fully custom-spec instruments.
Suhr has 230 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars, Guitar Amplifier Heads, and Electric Guitar Pickups. Their gear is featured by 140 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Metal. Notable users include Mateus Asato, Pete Thorn, and Andy Wood. Most Suhr products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
