Access Music is a German synthesizer manufacturer based in Recklinghausen, founded in 1997. The company originally set out to build hardware editors for navigating the deep menus of existing synthesizers, but quickly pivoted to designing its own instruments. The result was the Access Virus, a DSP-powered virtual analog synthesizer that debuted as a 12-voice instrument and grew into one of the most widely used hardware synths in electronic music production.
The Virus line has gone through several generations: the original Virus A, followed by the Virus B (1999), Virus C (2002), and the Virus TI (2005), which introduced USB-based "Total Integration" with DAWs for features like total recall and sample-accurate timing. Keyboard, desktop, and rackmount configurations have been offered across all generations, including the compact Virus TI Snow and the slim-profile Indigo and Polar models. The TI2 revision (2009) brought faster DSP processing and additional effects including tape delay and frequency shifter. The synthesizer employs subtractive, phase distortion, FM, and wavetable synthesis techniques.
The Virus has been adopted across a wide range of genres — from electronic and pop production to film scoring. Artists and producers known to use it include Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, The Prodigy, Radiohead, Linkin Park, The Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Sasha, and film composer Hans Zimmer.
