Founded in 1984 in California by Cliff Castle and Fred Bigeh, Audix began as the U.S. distributor for a Japanese electronics manufacturer of the same name before the founders acquired the brand and started designing their own microphones. The company relocated to Wilsonville, Oregon in 1991, where it built a dedicated R&D and manufacturing facility complete with a live soundstage for testing microphones in real-world conditions. All Audix products are designed and manufactured in the USA.
Audix is best known for its professional dynamic microphones used in live sound and studio applications. The OM series of vocal microphones — particularly the OM7, a hypercardioid dynamic mic prized for its feedback rejection and clarity — gained widespread recognition after Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam was photographed using one on the cover of Time magazine in 1993. The D6 kick drum microphone became an industry staple among live sound engineers and studio drummers for its punchy low-end response and tight cardioid pattern. Other notable products include the versatile i5 instrument microphone, the SCX25A studio condenser, the PDX series of studio vocal mics, and the A231 large-diaphragm condenser. The company also produces wireless systems, headworn and lavalier microphones, ceiling microphones for installed sound, and headphones.
Audix microphones have been used by artists including Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, Willie Nelson, Bruce Springsteen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bonnie Raitt, The Doobie Brothers, Crosby Stills & Nash, Travis Barker, and Ani DiFranco, among others.
