BSS Audio was founded in 1979 as Brooke Siren Systems by Chas Brooke and Stan Gould, two engineers who had previously worked at London mixing console maker Midas. The company built its reputation on professional signal processing for live sound and studio use, starting with the MCS Series modular crossover and expanding into compressors, equalizers, and loudspeaker management systems. Landmark analog products such as the DPR-402 compressor/limiter, the FCS-960 and FCS-966 Varicurve equalizers, and the Omnidrive loudspeaker controller became fixtures on touring racks and in fixed installations.

In the late 1990s BSS moved into networked digital audio with the Soundweb platform, an early open-architecture distributed DSP system, later succeeded by the Soundweb London series and the Soundweb OMNI processors. These products, along with the BLU-series networked I/O and the BLU Link digital audio bus, are widely used in conference centers, houses of worship, stadiums, and concert touring. The AR-series active DI boxes, including the phantom-powered AR-116, have also seen heavy use in live and studio applications.

BSS merged with Turbosound in 1986 under Edge Technology Group, which was sold to AKG in 1989 and then to Harman International in 1994. The brand is now part of Harman Professional Solutions and is headquartered alongside other Harman pro-audio brands, with its signal processors frequently specified in installation and broadcast contexts.
