Valley People is a pro audio equipment manufacturer with roots tracing back to Allison Research, a company founded by engineer and entrepreneur Paul Buff. Buff, who had previously designed and built a custom 12-track recording console for Frank Zappa's PAL Recording Studios, created a line of innovative dynamics processors built around his patented TA-101 VCA circuit. After relocating to Nashville, Buff merged Allison Research with Valley Audio in 1981 to form Valley People, introducing the 800-series rack format and expanding the product line significantly.
The company is best known for its dynamics processing hardware, including the KEPEX and KEPEX II keyable program expanders (gates), the Gain Brain and Gain Brain II compressor/limiter/duckers, the Dyna-mite multi-mode compressor/expander (featuring limit, expand, gate, and de-ess modes), and the MAXI Q three-band parametric equalizer. Valley People also produced the Model 401 Microphone Processor — a channel strip with a dedicated mic preamp, EQ, compressor, and 48V phantom power — as well as the Model 610 dual compressor/expander and the Model 415 de-esser. These units became staples in professional recording studios and broadcast facilities throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
The brand is owned by PMI Audio Group, based in Gardena, California, which has reissued select Valley People products including the Dyna-mite in 500-series format. Allison Research and Valley People are also remembered for their distinctive hand-drawn cartoon print advertisements that ran in dB Magazine during the 1970s, depicting their audio modules as anthropomorphic characters.
Valley People has 9 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Effects Processors. Their gear is featured by 11 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Electronic, and Pop. Notable users include Patrick Carney, Caramel Chameleon, and Paul McCartney.
