Jeff Tweedy's Gear

His infamous guitar, mentions it in Guitar World interview.

"TWEEDY: I have a 1965 SG, which is pretty much my main guitar. I also used an Epiphone Wilshire, the mini-humbucker model, a little bit. Those were my two main electrics, but I have so many guitars. I've been buying them forever. I did a few overdubs here and there with a Rickenbacker 330, and also some with a Tele. But for the most part, almost everything is on the SG."

“There’s no real focus to my collection, other than things that make me happy and things that feel inspiring to me,” he says. “And, I guess, in some cases, it’s stuff where I have some sort of hero emulation; I just have to have a guitar because I saw so-and-so play it. I have a thing for Dylan guitars--a (Gibson) Nick Lucas would have been one I bought for that reason, and the Martin 00-21NY I think I bought for that same reason.” - Jeff Tweedy.

"For the acoustic parts I primarily played a Fifties Gibson J -200. I actually have two of them that are almost identical -- both have double pickguards and a name on the top pickguard. One says "Bob" and one says "Buck." And I bought them years apart, so it's kind of strange! And then for amps, I almost always use tiny little Supros or Valcos in the studio. I keep them fairly clean but right on the edge, where they're about to break up. I've been on a Valco kick for a while now. I have a bunch of them, but I don't know the model numbers of any of them. I'm kind of a gear whore, but I'm not a very attention-to-detail gear whore. [laughs]"

“I was like, ‘Whoa, I wouldn’t have put stickers on my guitar, but OK.’” The stickers have endured, and the J-45 guitar has even graced the cover of No Depression magazine. Nearby, past the autographed photos of Bob Newhart and Don Rickles, there’s yet another Hopf, this one an Art Deco-inspired archtop. Tweedy points to a picture high up on the far wall featuring Elvis, in the Army, toting pretty much the same model Hopf. “It’s on ‘How to Fight Loneliness’ and ‘In a Future Age,’” Tweedy says. “It’s a really good guitar to bow because the neck radius has a little bit of an arch to it--you can hit individual strings with the bow." - Jason Verlinde, Fretboard Journal.

Wow, oh wow. Here's a real collector's choice. A beautiful 1945 Gibson LG-2 with banner headstock and original case. It's in very good players condition. It's a great sounding guitar for recording, playing live, campfires, the beach. You won't want to leave home without this one. We are selling a bunch of fun pieces in the Wilco Loft sale but this is one of the more serious items. This guitar has lived and obviously been well maintained for 70 years, but there are some visable repairs: there's a surface crack along seam between bridge and endpin, as well as some glue near the bridge indicating some work that was done in its lifetime. There's also a small repaired crack on lower end of the headstock but it does not appear to be from a total break. The tuning pegs and endpin are non-original, though the originals are in the case. These imperfections aside, this guitar has a tone of character and sound, and has been given all the proper care it needs from the great guys at our preferred Chicago repair shop, Chicago Fret Works.

One of the many '70s Soviet era Jolana guitars made in Czechoslovakia we have here at the Loft. Part of one of Jeff Tweedy's mini collections. Most models were designed as if they were trying to make a copy of a Western guitar by memory. The Jolana Iris was their version of a single pickup telecaster of course. There is a beautiful tele style bass version as well. This one hung in the Loft's studio control room for a few years along with a red one, a greenburst one, and a sunburst one. Each has their own differences. This one has that great bright green (we think it was a refinish) the one rail pickups, the upside-down logo inside the F hole, and the crazy bent arching bridge. They all have unscrewable top strap buttons that reveal a flathead screwdriver. Seriously. How could I make something like that up? It's true!

This lovely guitar was relic'd Mexican Fender '72 Re-issue Thinline Telecaster by Dax&Co Custom Shop. They do great great work. Jeff has been super happy with this guitar. It's all original, except for the Dax relic'd finish. The serial number has been removed from the back of the headstock and penciled onto the neck end inside the neck block. The fretboard edges have been hand rolled, and the fret ends dressed for a smooth, comfortable, worn in feel. The finish has been removed from the back of the neck for faster play. It has a three way selector as it would if it were a '72. The u-shaped neck and 7.5" radius feels great in the hand and has no fret wear. The guitar sounds and plays fantastic. It is very light and resonant and has all of the Tele twang you can handle. This feels as good as or maybe even better than any Fender custom shop relic. This is Jeff's and it's a tough one to put in the sale.

We have a ton of love for the Collings Guitar company. Jeff Tweedy now owns at least nine or ten Collings guitars that he uses both for recording and touring (you may have seen his Kel Kroydon-ish Collings Waterloo with rocketship artwork or his two Waterloo WL14s on tour). These guitars are made in Austin Texas and are the read deal. They are warm and even and project well and have rich tone and super nice response. But a lot of guitars have tall hat. These have more. I'm not sure if it's something you can name like pleasant overtones or vintage "recordings" tone. It may be something unnamable but when you know it when you hear it. In every case, when Jeff has received one of these Collings guitars, they get tuned up and are being used on an album track moments later. In many cases, they beat out a large portion of his prewar vintage acoustics worth four or five times what these go for. That is rare for a new guitar over here at the Loft!
