Aphex is a professional audio equipment company founded in 1975, best known for the Aural Exciter, a harmonic enhancement processor originally available only on a per-minute rental basis to major studios before being offered for sale as hardware units. The brand's name derives from "Audio Perception Heterodyne Exciter," and its core technologies — the Aural Exciter and the Big Bottom low-frequency enhancer, introduced in 1992 — became studio staples used in mixing, mastering, broadcast, and live sound. The company rebranded from Aphex Systems to simply Aphex in 2010 and was acquired by Freedman Electronics, the parent company of RØDE Microphones, in 2015.
