These circuits became the basis of the dbx 160 compressor, introduced in 1976, which helped define the sound of studio dynamics processing and remains a reference point for VCA-style compression.
The brand is also known for the dbx noise reduction system, a companding format used in analog tape recording that competed with Dolby NR, and for products such as the Model 700 digital audio processor. dbx was acquired by BSR in 1979 and, from 1979 through 1989, its name also appeared on consumer audio gear including speakers, CD players, and amplifiers.
