Carlsbro is a British amplification company founded in 1959 by Stuart and Sheila Mercer in Nottingham, England, making it one of the oldest guitar amplifier manufacturers in the UK alongside Vox, Selmer, and WEM. The company's early designs were hand-built for local bands, and its reputation grew rapidly — by the late 1960s, Carlsbro equipment was in use by acts including Herman's Hermits, The Hollies, The Beatles, and the Rolling Stones. The company also supplied its 50 TOP valve heads to Jim Marshall's guitar shop before Marshall began building amplifiers under his own name.
Carlsbro's product range expanded through the 1970s and 1980s with a shift toward solid-state designs, producing well-regarded guitar and bass amp series including the Stingray range, which offered professional-grade performance at competitive price points. A 1984 acquisition of HH Electronics added portable PA expertise to the lineup. Later endorsers of the brand included Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill and session bassist Phil Mulford, who worked with artists such as Annie Lennox and Take That.
In 2010, Carlsbro was acquired by Soundking Group, one of China's largest musical equipment manufacturers. Under that ownership, the brand has continued producing a range of products including the Kickstart practice amp series, the Sherwood acoustic amplifiers, electronic drum kits, and drum amplification, with product development maintained in the UK and manufacturing centered at Soundking's facility in Ningbo.
Carlsbro has 32 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Combo Guitar Amplifiers, Guitar Amplifier Heads, and Electronic Drum Sets. Their gear is featured by 7 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Electronic, and Pop. Notable users include Kevin Shields, Debbie Googe, and Andy Gill.
