Acoustic Control Corporation was founded by Steve Marks in Van Nuys, California, and built its reputation on solid-state amplifiers that found their way into professional touring rigs across rock, jazz, and funk. The company produced a range of instrument amplifiers under the Acoustic name, and while most of its lineup was solid-state, a handful of later models featured valve circuits.
The Acoustic 360/361 bass stack stands as the brand's most iconic product — a pairing of the 360 preamplifier with the 361 W-bin cabinet, each featuring a built-in 200-watt RMS power amplifier and a rear-facing 18" Cerwin-Vega loudspeaker. The rig became a favorite among high-profile bassists including Jaco Pastorius, John Paul Jones, and Larry Graham. Other notable artists associated with the brand include Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Pete Townshend, Pat Metheny, Flea, and Robby Krieger. Between 1972 and 1975, Acoustic also briefly produced the "Black Widow" line of electric guitars and basses.
The Acoustic name was revived and operates under the banner Acoustic Control Corp, producing acoustic guitar amplifiers (such as the A15V and A40), electric guitar amps in the GAMMA series, bass combo amplifiers, and a line of GAMMA effects pedals including the Atlas overdrive, Narcissus delay, Eros reverb, and Hades distortion. Products are distributed through major music retail chains including Guitar Center and Musician's Friend.
