Lakland is an American electric bass guitar manufacturer based in Chicago, Illinois, founded in 1994 by bassist Dan Lakin and luthier Hugh McFarland. The company's name is a portmanteau of the founders' surnames. The first Lakland prototype, unveiled at the 1994 NAMM Show, blended elements of the Fender Jazz Bass and early MusicMan StingRay, and set the template for a product line built around high-end vintage-style four- and five-string basses.
The lineup is split between USA-built instruments and the more affordable Skyline Series, introduced in 2002 and produced overseas to Lakland's U.S. specifications. Flagship models include the 44-series and 55-series basses (such as the 44-94 and 55-94), along with signature instruments developed in collaboration with bassists Joe Osborn, Bob Glaub, Donald 'Duck' Dunn, Jerry Scheff, and Darryl Jones. The Duck Dunn and Bob Glaub signatures remain in production as the 44-64 Custom and 44-64/55-64. The company also produces hand-wound pickups and strings from its Chicago factory.
Lakland has earned a reputation among studio and touring bassists for tight build tolerances, vintage-inspired tone, and modern playability. The brand is owned and managed by Hanson Musical Instruments, whose portfolio also includes Hanson Guitars, Ravenswood Guitars, and several pickup lines.
Lakland has 59 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Electric Basses and Bags & Cases. Their gear is featured by 59 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Funk / Soul. Notable users include Geezer Butler, David Hood, and Patrick Dahlheimer. Most Lakland products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
