Founded in 1987 by Sheldon Dingwall in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Dingwall Designer Guitars is a Canadian manufacturer of bass guitars and electric guitars best known for pioneering the use of fanned frets (multiscale) on bass instruments. After building electric guitars for several years, Dingwall shifted focus to bass guitars in 1992 upon discovering Ralph Novak's fanned-fret concept, applying it to extend the bass-side scale length to 37 inches — closer to the string lengths found inside a piano — for improved low-end clarity and sustain. The company's factory was destroyed in a fire in 1996 but was rebuilt, and Dingwall has grown into one of Canada's largest guitar manufacturers.
The Dingwall lineup spans a wide range of models including the Combustion, Super J, Super P, D-Roc, Afterburner series, Prima Artist, and Z. The NG model, a signature bass designed with Adam "Nolly" Getgood of Periphery, has become one of the brand's best-selling instruments and a go-to choice in the progressive metal and djent communities. Dingwall also produces the Lee Sklar Signature series, designed with legendary session bassist Leland Sklar. Other prominent Dingwall players include John Taylor of Duran Duran, Jacob Umansky of Intervals, Tony Levin, and Robbie Merrill of Godsmack. The brand's fanned-fret design has earned a devoted following among bassists who prioritize articulate low-end response, particularly in extended-range and five- and six-string configurations.
Dingwall has 71 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Electric Basses and Distortion Effects Pedals. Their gear is featured by 67 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Pop. Notable users include Rufus Mann, Matt Deis, and Adam Nolly Getgood. Most Dingwall products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
