Founded in 1986 by Holger Stonjek and Gerd Gorzelke in a converted farm building on a street called Am Sandberg near Wolfsburg, Germany, Sandberg has grown from a small repair shop into one of Europe's most respected bass guitar manufacturers. Stonjek, who trained as a piano maker at the Wilhelm Schimmel Pianofortefabrik in Braunschweig, began by building neck-through basses with exotic tonewoods before expanding the lineup to appeal to a broader range of players. The company operates out of a dedicated facility in Braunschweig with a team of approximately twenty-five luthiers.
Sandberg's core bass lineup includes the California T and California V series (inspired by classic Fender designs but with distinctly modern construction and electronics), the Forty Eight, the Electra, the Panther, and the Florence. The brand also produces electric guitars in California DC, California ST, Electra DC, and Florence configurations. Sandberg offers extensive customization through an online configurator, along with options like artificial aging, vibration treatment, and their eco-conscious Greenline builds.
The company's artist roster spans a wide range of genres. Signature models have been developed for Oliver Riedel of Rammstein, Ida Nielsen (known for her work with Prince's New Power Generation), Martin Mendez of Opeth, Yolanda Charles, Ken Taylor, Torsten Scholz, and Victor Brandt, among others. Jean-Michel Labadie of Gojira is also among the brand's endorsed players.
Sandberg has 45 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Electric Basses, Solid Body Electric Guitars, and Straps & Strap Locks. Their gear is featured by 49 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Pop. Notable users include Oliver Riedel, Jean-Michel Labadie, and Fredrik Larsson. Most Sandberg products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
