Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Larrivée Guitars D-03.

User experience

  • Owners describe the D-03's sustain as unparalleled, contributing to its standout sound profile.

    Source
  • Newer Larrivée guitars, including the D-03, may exhibit a "new guitar stiffness," lacking the depth and resonance of older, well-played models.

    Source
  • Users with both Martin and Larrivee guitars often favor Larrivee for its tonal qualities, particularly recommending the L-03 model.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The D-03's flat, uncolored tone is highlighted for folk music but is also adaptable to pop and R&B mixes.

    Source
  • The D-03's mahogany body is preferred for a richer, Martin-like tone, ideal for folk music with Travis picking and flat picking.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • A 25-year-old D-03 is considered nearly vintage, with resale values surprisingly low, offering excellent deals under $1K.

    Source
  • Buying used Larrivée guitars can offer significant savings and potentially better sound due to the guitars being broken in over time.

    Source

Build quality

  • Canadian-manufactured Larrivees are praised for their high quality, with older models being particularly valued.

    Source
  • Recent D-03 models are noticeably lighter, possibly due to changes in wood density or construction techniques, resulting in more responsiveness but potentially increased fragility.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Checking condition specifics like cracks, neck angle, and bridge condition is advised due to the guitar's age.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users prefer older Larrivée models like the L-03 for their deeper and richer sound, suggesting new models don't match this tonal quality.

    Source
  • The Larrivée D-03 offers a darker, thicker tone similar to a Martin D-18, contrasting with the Taylor's brighter and clearer sound.

    Source
  • Taylor guitars provide an airy tone, suitable for modern folk/pop but may lack depth for styles like early Neil Young.

20 years and I'm still impressed

I bought this from the Chicago School of Folk Music in 2005 and it hasn't been eclipsed by any other guitars I've tried. Sounds great and has aged well. I especially love it with Monel strings.

Love the sounds when using Martin Monel strings.
