Founded in 1885 by clarinetist Henri Selmer in the Montmartre district of Paris, Selmer is a French manufacturer of professional-grade woodwind and brass instruments, based in Mantes-la-Ville near Paris. The company began by crafting reeds and mouthpieces before expanding into clarinets and, starting in 1922, saxophones. Selmer acquired the workshops of Adolphe Sax & Co — the original inventor of the saxophone — in 1929, further cementing its place in the instrument's lineage.

Selmer's saxophone catalog includes some of the most celebrated models in the instrument's history. The Mark VI, produced from 1954 to 1975, is widely regarded as one of the greatest saxophones ever made and remains highly sought after on the vintage market. Subsequent professional lines include the Super Action 80, Series II, Series III, Reference 54, Reference 36, Supreme, and Signature. On the clarinet side, Selmer produces models ranging from the student-oriented Prologue to professional instruments like the Présence, Privilège, and Récital, all crafted from grenadilla wood. The company also produced a small number of acoustic guitars from 1932 to 1952 — initially designed in collaboration with luthier Mario Maccaferri — that became iconic through their association with Django Reinhardt and the gypsy jazz tradition.

Selmer instruments have been the choice of numerous influential musicians across jazz, classical, and popular music. Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Michael Brecker, and Ornette Coleman all played Selmer saxophones, while classical saxophonists Marcel Mule and Claude Delangle have championed the brand in the concert hall. Benny Goodman played a Selmer clarinet early in his career.
