Summit Audio is a Northern California-based manufacturer of professional audio signal processing equipment, founded in 1978 by Michael Papp. Papp had been running a record pressing and cassette duplication facility before moving into used pro audio brokerage, where he noticed strong demand for vintage vacuum tube gear. That demand led him to build new tube-based products aimed at combining the sonic character of classic equipment with modern reliability.
The company's first product, the TLA-100 tube leveling amplifier, was co-developed with Dave Hill (who later founded Crane Song) and remains in production, making it one of the longest continuously produced pieces of outboard gear in the pro audio industry. Summit's catalog centers on hybrid tube/solid-state designs and includes the DCL-200 dual compressor/limiter, the TPA-200B two-channel mic/instrument preamplifier, the EQP-200B stereo passive tube EQ, the TD-100 instrument preamp/DI, the TLA-50 compressor, and the Everest channel strip. The company also produces a half-rack series of more compact processors.
Units are hand-built in the United States and are widely used in recording studios, mastering rooms, broadcast facilities, and post-production houses. Summit's gear has also been modeled in software form, including a Softube emulation of the TLA-100A distributed through Universal Audio, which helped cement the unit's reputation as a studio standard for vocal and bass compression.
Summit Audio has 18 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Effects Processors, Preamps, and Direct Boxes. Their gear is featured by 15 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Electronic, and Pop. Notable users include Jamie Stewart, Nigel Godrich, and Mark Egan.
