Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Allen & Heath Xone:3D.

Build quality

  • The jog wheels are considered subpar, often repurposed for library scrolling due to their limited functionality.

    Source
  • The custom modifications use a silver chassis, noted for its slick and appealing design.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The built-in soundcard permits only three Traktor channels, aligning well with setups involving two turntables and two Traktor decks.

    Source
  • Xone:3D's analog inputs allow integration with iPad LINK-enabled apps for expanded control and mixing options, though audio quality may vary depending on cables and channels used.

    Source
  • The modified Xone:3D adds reverb and echo effects to the FX1 bus, expanding its sound manipulation capabilities.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The Xone:3D operates on USB 1.1, which may limit compatibility with Traktor Pro's USB 2.0 requirement, though this primarily affects NI soundcards.

    Source
  • Some users report successful operation with MacBook Pro 2015 on macOS Monterey, but issues exist with newer Macs, like M1 models not recognizing the device.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Users have successfully mapped the Xone:3D for Traktor, often customizing mappings from existing Xone:4D layouts due to their similar design.

    Source
  • For those facing compatibility issues, using old MIDI-DIN ports with an external audio interface can bypass limitations of the built-in interface on newer systems.

    Source
  • A custom conversion integrates a Xone K1 or K2 into a Xone:3D, requiring a new faceplate and internal restructuring for enhanced functionality.

    Source

User experience

  • Long-term users report filter popping issues, a known problem across many Allen & Heath mixers, though the mixer remains highly reliable overall.

    Source
  • Owners express significant satisfaction with the custom modifications, often referring to the sound as "beautiful" and the design as "art."

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Sticky jog wheel rubber can be cleaned with alcohol, but completely removing stickiness may require stripping, which risks damaging the plastic.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Xone:3D integrates well with Traktor's stems feature, with users mapping the four sliders and MIDI controls for enhanced TP4 functionality.

Fantastic and timeless.

The Xone:3d was a massive addition to my live setup as it enabled me to create a completely custom mapping to control every aspect of the software. The only contact I would have to make with the computer was to look for a track, or to see the software as I was playing. Unfortunately they are now discontinued so the firmware is a bit non-existent but it still works pretty fantastically considering how old it is. The mixer is also absolutely unbelievable, you can't go wrong with Xone Filters, which are a huge element of how I play. I really look forward to picking up the new 4D; this masterpiece's bigger brother.

Replaced by the Xone:4D

Soon after this one came out it got replaced by the Xone:4D ( which is an Traktor certified mixer for DVS ). It also misses the 4 band EQ the Xone:92 has and which I miss a lot when using this one. Nice to be able to use in a home studio as a sound card / midi controller and dj mixer.
