Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Pioneer DJM-800 Mixer.

Features and functionality

  • Owners report the DJM-800 effects can sync timing with MIDI, making it useful for dynamic synth patch changes during performances.

    Source
  • The DJM-800 includes a pan effect, which some users prefer over newer models like the DJM-900NXS2.

    Source
  • The mixer sends a MIDI clock signal, but some devices may require a "start" command to function properly, necessitating manual adjustments.

    Source
  • The DJM-800 allows for MIDI connectivity, sending CC values for knob operations, though it requires sacrificing a whole channel for control changes.

    Source
  • The DJM-800 lacks a USB port, which limits digital connectivity options compared to newer models.

    Source

User experience

  • Rotary kits are popular for making gradual transitions smoother, though they may be less effective for quick cuts in genres like hip-hop.

    Source
  • Some owners dislike the reverb effect but appreciate the mixer’s overall workflow, especially in comparison to the DJM-900 series.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Some users describe the DJM-800's sound as less synthetic compared to the DJM-900 series when connected digitally.

    Source
  • The DJM-800 lacks official Serato support; DJM-850 is recommended for better software compatibility.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The rotary mod on the DJM-800 doesn't significantly enhance sound but provides a smoother interface for blending tracks.

    Source
  • The DJM-800 can be a cost-effective solution for DJs in regions with limited resources, allowing for hybrid sets without high-end equipment.

    Source
  • The DJM-800 can be used in hybrid setups with CDJs and live synths, making it suitable for DJs who want to integrate live instruments.

    Source
  • Despite its age, it is still used in home setups and some pro settings for practice and learning mixer functions.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Rotary kits can be easily installed by removing and replacing fader knobs, providing smoother transitions for specific styles like house music.

    Source

Build quality

  • The DJM-800's crossfader feels wobbly and may not withstand extensive use, especially for scratch DJs.

    Source
  • Some users find the filter unpleasantly resonant and the effects lacking in quality, suggesting these may not suit all users' preferences.

    Source

Other

  • The mixer’s MIDI capabilities are not ideal for serving as a sequencing or MIDI "brain" in complex live setups, better suited for audio mixing and effects.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners have successfully soldered in new parts like volume faders and beat selector knobs, enhancing longevity for about $500 total investment.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • It works with Rekordbox 5 and earlier, offering some integration with digital DJ software despite its age.

A Legend

The Pioneer DJM-800 is legendary even today, examples of these mixers well over a decade old still run as good as when they were first manufactured. Not to mention this mixer was the one to really the set the gold standard in the late 2000's that just about every single Pioneer mixer since has followed. All of the effects sound awesome and hold up even today, sound quality can't be argued with. The build quality of the 800 is quite the thing to behold, playing a set behind one of these certainly inspires a good deal of confidence.

Pioneer DJM-800 Mixer

DJM is a range of DJ mixers made by Pioneer Electronics.

Mixers in the DJM series include the DJM-300,DJM-350,DJM-400, DJM-500, DJM-600, DJM-700,DJM-750, DJM-707, DJM-800, DJM-850, DJM-900 nexus, DJM-909, DJM-1000and the DJM-2000. They also have many cueing facilities and effects that can be applied to any channel, in conjunction with the CDJ range of CD players made by Pioneer, with the control wire plugged in between mixer and CDJ-type CD player, so that either can be started/stopped remotely by the other (Relay Play) or with the so-called 'Fader Start' of the mixer.

Key feature for Pioneer is the BPM tempo synchronised sound effects section (world first) and VU meter for each channel. The DJM-909 was the world's first mixer with a LCD Touch sensitive control.

The mixers of the latest digital generation all have 32-bit DSPs so, they have much better sound quality.

Great

This is a great 4 channel mixer. It has all the goodies and if you are a mid level dj I would suggest this mixer for starters. The only thing I can complain about is the size. It is very big and somewhat bulkier than the djm 900.
