Critic Reviews

Mesa Cab Clone

soundonsound.com

Mesa's Cab Clone offers a solid, affordable solution for guitarists seeking a cab-simulated direct output. Its simple design is robust, with a dynamic mic-like sound that suits both live and studio settings. However, its passive load design falls short for silent recording, lacking the dynamic feel of more advanced options. Despite this, the Cab Clone remains a viable choice for those prioritizing straightforward functionality over high-end features.

reactive load? are ya sure Randy Smith?

I am not blown away by this amp load/DI box and cabinet sim. I actually like Mesa's analog cab simulations more than I expected to, much better than the H&K redbox that used to be the industry standard and also nicer than the ADA microcab of the 80s/90s....

that said, the reactive laod in this is no better sounding than the semi-reactive resistor/coiled wire arrangement of the THD hot plate. That's fine for a few dB attenuation, but it don't cut it to fully load down an amp to use it as a glorified effects processor. Ya need some speaker-like reaction! Its a shame Mesa and Weber VST can't get together. Weber's mass attenuator had a great speaker-motor-based reactive load, but the build quality sucked and their line out is crap. If ya took all of mesa's handy line out features like variable output Z, great level control and the nice cab simulaltions you would have a really nice all analog slent recording solution. As it stands I am not knocked out. I think this is another load box that's getting sold. Oh well.

I always write my negative reviews whenever I take a long weekend to clean out my piles of gear and unload crap on ebay, reverb and craigslist.... EVERYTHING MUST GOOOOO!!!!!!
