Versatile Powerhouse for Electronic Drummers

The Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad impressed us as a robust and versatile tool for electronic drummers and percussionists. From the moment we unboxed it, we were struck by its solid build quality and professional feel. This is no toy – it's a roadworthy piece of gear that can withstand the rigors of live performance and frequent transport.

The illuminated pads and display are a godsend in low-light situations, and we found the layout intuitive and easy to navigate. The Wave Manager Software made importing and managing samples a breeze, and we appreciated the flexibility of the sub-outs for separating sounds.

Sound quality is great. While the stock sound library is somewhat limited, the ability to import custom samples opens up a world of sonic possibilities. The built-in effects and looping capabilities are impressive.

However, it's not without its quirks. We noticed that the top bar triggers can be a bit finicky, and some might find the lack of a built-in sound generator limiting. The price point is also on the higher side, though we feel it's justified by the overall quality and features.

For us, the SPD-SX is best suited for professional drummers and producers who need a reliable, high-quality sampling pad for live performances and studio work. It might be overkill for casual hobbyists or those on a tight budget, but for serious musicians looking to expand their sonic palette, it's a solid investment.

Critic Reviews

Roland SPDSX

soundonsound.com

The Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad is heralded as a significant upgrade over its predecessor, featuring enhanced sample memory, USB connectivity, and a larger display. Musicians will appreciate its intuitive operation, real-time effects, and robust sampling capabilities that cater not just to drummers but also DJs and remixers. It excels in live settings with its responsive pads and visual feedback. However, the Wave Manager software could benefit from more functionality, and it only supports 16-bit/44.1kHz audio. Despite these minor drawbacks, the SPD-SX remains a powerful and versatile tool for musicians looking to expand their creative horizons.

positive

Roland SPD-SX review

drumspy.com

The Roland SPD-SX remains a popular choice for drummers with its sturdy build, intuitive interface, and versatile sampling capabilities. However, its limited internal memory, lack of sound generation, and basic software features show its age, especially with the newer SPD-SX PRO available. While it excels in live settings with seamless DAW integration and reliable performance, issues like the unreliable power button and outdated specs might concern potential buyers. Overall, it's a solid tool for creative drummers but consider newer alternatives if you need cutting-edge features.

Backbone to any modern kit

The endless potential of sampling and standard triggering, combined with intuitive kit creation, allows me to run backing tracks or create entirely new arrangements, as well as the standard "trap table" percussion sample setup that drastically reduces my need to carry additional odds and ends. Best, I can load my own samples into this for a less "canned" sound with these percussion sounds. The industry standard.

Love it

I use this at almost every gig. The dual stereo outs mean i can run stereo tracks with click and a seperate line for perc samples with ease.Handy on board effects and the ability to easily sample are great!

The Best

I use it for everything. You can easily assign pads, add more pads, use guitar's footswitch to launch sounds, it's simply awesome

Roland SPD-SX

The Roland DPD-SX is my live "drum set." I use some of the built in sounds for improvising live, and use custom kits built with uploaded drum sounds I used during production.

At 4:06 into the video Palace's Matt Hodges - GEAR MASTERS Ep. 464, Matt Hodges talks about his Roland SPD-SX Sampling Pad, which accompanies his drum kit:

For electronics, I've got an SPD here, but I really just use it for triggering a couple songs in the set. We've got some atmospheric noises, so I trigger those in a song and play with the metronome to make sure they come in at the right points. I don’t use the pads for any drum sounds - it's purely for triggering noises in a couple of songs. The way it's set up, I have two WAV files: one for the metronome and one for the music. They're both triggered to start at the same time when I hit one of the pads. So I don’t use the metronome built-into the SPD and I don't have it coming from front of house - I trigger it here, the WAVs are saved onto here so they trigger at the same time.

Mentioned in this January 2018 Modern Drummer Magazine interview.

In my touring band, I sing, play guitar, and play two toms and two 9? Simmons Pads hooked up to a Roland SPD-SX, triggering vocal samples or electronic drum sounds, depending on the song. There is a sit-down drummer and synth bassist to round out the live band. This setup allows me to both be the frontman, on vocals and guitar, but also play drums in focused, acrobatic bursts throughout the set.
