Owner Insights
We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Sonarworks Reference 4 Suite Bundle.
Software and compatibility
-
Some owners with Big Sur on M1 laptops report software stability issues, suggesting that updates may be necessary for optimal performance.
Source -
Some users experience crashing issues with SoundID when using USB switchers, indicating a need for careful consideration of system configuration.
Source -
Users have noted that integrating Sonarworks with setup tools like AudioHijack can streamline workflow by applying corrections outside the DAW environment.
Source -
Running Sonarworks at the system level on macOS ensures all audio outputs, not just the DAW, benefit from correction, avoiding export issues.
Source
Use cases and applications
-
Incorporating tools like GoodHertz CanOpener alongside Sonarworks can simulate speaker crossfeed, reducing fatigue and improving stereo imaging for headphone-only mixing setups.
Source -
It's recommended to use Sonarworks alongside acoustic treatment, as it enhances monitor performance but doesn't replace physical room acoustics management.
Source -
While not a replacement for acoustic treatment, Sonarworks is particularly beneficial in small or poorly treated rooms, where physical treatment is impractical or impossible.
Source
Comparisons
-
Reference 4 is favorably compared to the newer SoundID (Reference 5), which introduces presets for simulating different listening environments like car or iPhone speakers.
Source -
Some users find Sonarworks less effective than hardware solutions like Dirac, noting that Dirac uses more advanced correction methods beyond simple EQ adjustments.
Source
User experience
-
Users highlight significant improvements in headphone accuracy, noting that it can make lower-grade models sound more professional, particularly enhancing the DT 1990 headphones' accuracy.
Source -
Several users highlight improved workflow efficiency and confidence in mixing, attributing this to Sonarworks' ability to enhance linear frequency response.
Source -
Many users report a significant reduction in the need for external referencing, like car checks, due to improved mix translation across different listening environments.
Source
Features and functionality
-
The Sonarworks Reference 4 includes a 'Systemwide' app that applies corrections across all computer audio outputs, enhancing general listening experiences beyond DAW use.
Source -
The software allows toggling between linear phase and mixed phase modes, with linear phase reducing phase shift but potentially adding pre-ringing, which can be problematic for transient content.
Source
Value and pricing
-
Trying out Sonarworks with a free trial is suggested, ensuring satisfaction before purchasing, with emphasis on the value of the measurement mic even if software isn't retained.
Source
Setup and maintenance
-
Users note that setting up Sonarworks is straightforward, with a guided process that simplifies calibration, especially when using the included measurement mic.
Source -
The effectiveness of Sonarworks as a correction tool is highly dependent on using their own calibrated microphone for measurements, which aligns more accurately with other high-end systems.

Best thing you can have!
When i bought a pair of M-50x i didn't knew it dosn't a flat frequency response , which gradually impacted my mixing stage , so i came across this software on youtube and tried the online version first and then purchased the headphone edition after few months, i gotta say it's bang for every buck . after a year i bought pair of monitors but my room f**ked up my frequency response so i upgraded to studio edition and also got their microphone xref-20 for the software...

Can't live without it
In conjunction with my room treatment, this makes my monitors a pleasure to work with. Really makes a difference to get some quality room treatment (takes care of things Sonarworks can’t fix like early reflections and impulse response). I’m a happy camper! =D

Rachel is seen showing her Sonorworks reference to get good acoustics in her room in this video around 3:00.
14:43 "On my master channel, I've applied the EQ curve created by playing sinewave sweeps through my speakers from the listening position using my measuring microphone, the Behringer ECM8000. So what this does, is it flattens out the sound that I'm hearing from my listening position so that when I'm mastering, I'm hearing what I'm supposed to be hearing."
In a YouTube video on the DerpcatMusic channel, Derpcat describes the Sonarworks Reference 4 Suite Bundle as "the most useful thing" they've ever used in their studio environment.

The vibe was recreated in part with the use of the popular acoustic treatment measurement and reference plug-in, Sonarworks Reference, which takes measurements of your room with a series of recordings and calibrates an EQ curve to counteract any nasty dips or bumps in your room’s acoustic response.
“Even if your studio sounds amazing, Sonarworks helps a lot because you trust yourself a little bit more,” says Jonas. “You know what’s coming through your monitors is actually correct. You stop putting effort and energy into EQing things for hours and just let it be and move on to the next part of the production. When I first did it there was a big dip around 200Hz and another at 300Hz, so obviously we needed to work more on the treatment but it works for now.”
