Founded in 1986 by Keith Rowland Klawitter — a film mix engineer whose initials gave the company its name — KRK Systems grew out of a garage in Huntington Beach, California. Dissatisfied with the monitors available while working at major Hollywood film studios including Paramount, Universal, and MGM, Klawitter began designing his own speakers. His peers quickly took notice, and KRK evolved into one of the most recognized studio monitor brands in professional audio.
KRK is best known for the ROKIT series, which launched in 2005 and became the best-selling powered studio monitor line in the world, establishing itself as a staple in home studios and professional recording environments alike. The company's product range spans multiple monitor lines — including the V Series, Classic Series, Kreate Series, and GoAux portable monitors — as well as powered subwoofers and KNS-branded studio headphones. The Exposé series, introduced in 1996, was among the first active studio monitors with built-in amplification.
KRK monitors are widely used across music production, mixing, and mastering, with the brand's signature yellow Kevlar woofer cones making them instantly recognizable. The company is part of the Gibson family of brands and operates out of Southern California.
KRK has 122 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Active & Passive Monitors, Studio Subwoofers, and Headphones & In-Ear Monitors. Their gear is featured by 528 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Hip Hop, and Pop. Notable users include Claudio Cueni, Dwayne Larring, and Skrillex. Most KRK products sit on the budget-friendly end of the spectrum.
