Description

The SX-K250A Vintage Keyboard by Technics

The Technics SX-K250A is a vintage home keyboard from the 1980s, designed as part of Technics’ early “personal keyboard” range using PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) sound technology. It offers a combination of preset orchestral sounds and a simple synthesizer section, making it suitable for beginners and home players rather than professional studio use. The keyboard features built-in auto-accompaniment and rhythm patterns, allowing users to create full backing tracks with minimal effort. Its integrated stereo speakers and onboard controls make it a self-contained instrument that doesn’t require external gear. Although limited by modern standards, it was considered advanced at the time for bringing digital sound reproduction into an affordable home keyboard.

Specs:

• 49 keys (4 octaves, C–C)
• 8-note polyphony
• PCM-based sound generation (early digital sampling technology)
• Built-in stereo speakers (approx. 2 × 5W output)
• Preset voices: organ, piano, strings, brass, guitar, accordion, harpsichord
• Auto-accompaniment (“one-finger chords”) and rhythm section
• Program chord memory (stores chord sequences)
• RCA audio outputs and headphone jack
• Optional expression pedal input
• Power: mains or optional 12V DC adaptor
• Weight approx. 8 kg

Technics SXK250 (EMM Aug 84)

muzines.co.uk

The Technics SX-K250 personal keyboard steps up with its PCM-encoded voices, shedding its 'toy' image through clear and lifelike sounds. While not the most compact or affordable, it shines with its preset voice quality, offering eight-note polyphony and a decent range of orchestral and solo tones. The PCM tech delivers impressive sound reproduction, making it a viable solo instrument. However, its rhythm section doesn't quite match up to dedicated drum machines, and the hi-hat disappoints. Priced at £499, it lacks user programmability, which could be a dealbreaker for some. Despite this, it stands out in its class with solid build quality and useful RAM storage features.
