HOLY SHIT THE EDGE HAS THE NEW GEAR...

But seriously, you can still find the chefs on Equipboard if you have enough luck to find them...

Identifying the gear

Anyway, I have found photos of Ross MacDonald's gear, and his EquipBoard desperately needs to be refreshed.

This upright is impossible to identify, Martin acoustic bass (maybe B65?), or a Sigma Martin STB-R, and some kind of lap steel.

Checking the source's reliability

How about this site? http://www.gemarchergear.com/ I find it legitimate, especially because this guy got to see Gem himself, discuss about his gear and even take a photo of his pedalboard! The gear is somewhat legit, and I find the whole website legit!

Identifying the gear

Croatia prices sound pretty close to me for what you've outlined. Good voxes are rare here too. You can get a custom classic anywhere (and probably overpay for it), but vintage voxes are typically only available on the web anymore and the handwired stuff is rare in person and then its typical new and marked up high. I got lucky with my AC30s. My 62 came from the web 15 years ago or more. I actually lost the auction on ebay, but the guy who outbid me never paid so I got it for my high bid, I think $1200 plus some extortionate shipping fee which was a lot for an amp at the time.

My fawn ac30HW was a lucky score. I lived in a better gear region of the USA at the time and bought it used from a store I was really friendly with who accepted mostly trade items for it and marked the sticker price down for me because I had helped them sell a lot of gear by making it sound good and talking more affluent customers into purchasing it. I miss living in Maryland because I had a great relationship with this store. I must have bought, sold and traded a dozen guitars there not to mention trading vintage pedals and such. They always had something cool on the floor and they always wheeled and dealed with me. Both me and Atomic music made out well on all our interactions and its rare to encounter a shop with great stuff, flexible pricing and a fair trading policy like that. Its also rare to get rewarded for playing the merchandise even if you play it really well.

The thing with me is that even when I am happy with my stuff I always have my eyes peeled and I am not afraid to purchase something I can abrely afford as long as I know I can sell it at a profit if I need the money back. Its rarely failed me. Having an encyclopedica knowledge comes from this sort of behavior. I rarely keep stuff with great resale forever unless its so good it redefines me as a guitarist and I can't do without it. That's happened maybe twice. Otherwise I try not to get precious with anything. Selling a piece that suddenly goes up in value is usually a good idea because the extra money allows you to keep the less valuable stuff in your stable. If you really miss it you can replace it unless that particular instrument has sentimental value. I look at my gear as an emergency bank account. I would never empty it and I rarely dip into it, but its nice to know its there.

As I have said before, Voxes are really rare here and you really have to see a lot of bands if you wanna see Vox. Anyway, Laney amps are popular here because of the price, but something that most of the Croatian guitar players (as I've said before) play are Marshalls. They sell like crazy. I checked out the prices for the guitars, but vintage ones are something that caught my eye. 1979 Gibson Les Paul Standard, all stock, goes for 2500$, which is a good price for second-hand here. Then I stumbled across Gibson Marauder, EMG 85 on the bridge and 87 on the neck, although I see no logic in that, it sells for 850$. Lawsuit models are really cheap, so you can get Tokai or Greco LP for about 400$, which is actually a really good price. Most expensive Gibson here is the 20th Anniversary LP Custom from 1974, of which were 572 made. It costs 4900$. Fenders are much cheaper than the Gibsons, and the most expensive ones are those with CBS Headstocks, from '79 and so on, they cost about 2200$. And Custom Shop Stratocasters cost about the same here. PRS guitars all cost the same - about 1690$ each. Yeeah, and Gibson J-50 from 1962 costs about 5000$.

What's Your Dream Band Line-Up?

This is mine

  2. Piano & Backing Vocal - Jamie Cullum
  3. Vocal & Rythm Guitar - Kelly Jones (Stereophonics)
  4. Drum - Charlie Watts (Stones)

How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.

I'll get back to you on the 1st one. On the 2nd one I will say you want a hollowbodied bass guitar and a very clear sounding amplifier that preserves and augments the instrument's acoustic qualities. The rest is technique if you want to sound like an upright play as much like an upright player as you can. A fretless electric bass might help. Or you could buy a cheap upright, which is what I would do. Its not hard to learn it and there are lots of uprights to be had on the cheap used.

Not many companies make the upright bass effect, but Roland VB-99 could do here. (0:54 for the upright simulation) But still, it costs a lot of money so, no.

Many people suggested the Boss CEB-3, level cranked up and rate at 11. Depth a bit less than maximum. I'd like to hear thoughts on that!

Or Nylon strings? I've heard that people use this method too!

Identifying the gear

I feel your pain, truly.... it can be ahrd to find GOOD Gibsons and Fenders here at reasonable prices, so I can only imagine how it is in eastern Europe.

Well, about the prices...I never said that the prices were awful. I just don't know what do Western people consider under "reasonable prices". We don't buy off eBay or Reverb or Fretted Americana or any dealer from UK or US, because shipping is way too high. In Croatia, eBay might be popular just because of those tiny things like tuners, eventually pedals because shipment doesn't cost too much. But nobody really buys guitars, amps or anything that's huge. Shipping prices are just unfair. About the prices here, well, here's how it goes. (Everything I will say here does not include shipping.)(And all are second-hand, but mint condition.)

Pedals, like Strymons are a bitch to get here, TimeLines are out of stock, actually, the only pedal you can buy is Mobius, and they cost like 400$. If you live where I live, you'd probably pay like 5$ of shipping. People are also selling whole pedalboards. A pedalboard, TC PolyTune, TC Hall Of Fame, TC Repeater, HBE Overdrive, Visual Sound Compressor, Dunlop 535Q Wah, Boss FV-300L and a power supply totally cost about a 1000$. Boss PS-5 costs about 125$, and DS-2 is about 40$, which I don't consider much.

Amplifiers, I know you're all about Voxes, so lemme start with that. Vox AC30CC2X with Celestion Alnico Blues costs 1050$, Vox VT30 costs 200$, and that's pretty much it. Vox AC30's are pretty rare, you can get AC50 or AC15 pretty easy, but there's only one second-hand Vox AC30 in Croatia that is currently selling. I have no idea about the shipment, but I'm sure that it wouldn't cost a lot, considering Hrvatska Pošta (our main postal service here) does not pay so much for shipping. Marshalls are very popular here, and every man's dream is that he'd play one day on Marshall head. Marshall JMP-50 with matching 4x12 cabinet costs about 690$, and combos like Valvestate are 200$ or even more - really depends on the model. No Marshall model here is over 1600$.

And guitars and other things, well...i'll check the prices out. They aren't so pricey, at least for me, but I still can't afford one.

Identifying the gear

The Walrus is right, its a bobcat, my band's original manager owned one as a decorative item in her fancy condo. If you can find one with a straight neck or fix the warped neck (I am pretty sure they don't have truss rods) then they sound good thanks to the dearmond gold foil pickup(s)

these junk guitars are expensive in the USA now given how poorly they are made overall... I really regret not buying tons of them when they were around for $50 at yardsales, pawnstores and guitar shows because now I could be raking in the Philly Hipster loot (the last 10 years our city saw a boom of spoiled, rich 20-something's moving into fishtown and nolibs, getting guitars, starting a vintage vinyl collection and trying to be cool, I could tell stories) and laughing all the way to the bank with it... people used to spend the $50 just to steal the pickups to install in teles at the neck. I think I still have a pair of these goldfoils in a box waiting for the right project. They were pulled from a similar Harmony guitar owned by my best friend in the 90s. I think I turned the body into a sculpture as an artschool project, LOL

Ah, I wish something like this could happen here. In Yugoslavia, we could only get those vintage guitars which were called Melodija. They sound good, but they cost around $200 and they have the same quality as Fuzztone, Kraftsman or something like that. You rarely found a guitar that was a Fender, or a Gibson here. Bands like Prljavo Kazalište (highly suggest them a listen), Metak and so on used Gibsons and Fenders, but have no idea how they got it. Those players (like me) used something like this. I know, they are odd-shaped, but there are way way more models that were produced in Eastern bloc than this one. Unfortunately, I can't help because I'm really bad at identifying the models and most of the players that played those died and guitars are now godknowswhere... But, still, the 14, 15 and 16 Gibsons with Min E-Tune are also overpriced. Cheap guitars became part of many musician's rig, and yeah, it was quite a boom for hipsters back then.

Yo, I said left, not right.

Oh, I'm sorry. Kinda funny story, but I have problems with left-right. I switch them a lot. Actually, the pedal you're looking for could be some kind of custom-made pedal, but this seems to me like a Klon KTR Overdrive pedal.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

Okay, now. Here are more things that I found/would suggest.

1) http://equipboard.com/pros/mauricio-duran - I admire this guy for recognizing basically everything that Duran put on his Instagam profile, but his submission notes are just awful. I mean, he recognized something I wouldn't recognize in a loooooong time, but still - his notes are just not OK.

2) Why don't Equipboard aldready has its own app? I mean, it would help a lot. Not everybody has access to computers all day long, and you da real MVP if you submitted the actual submission via mobile phone now, when we don't have the actual app ready.

3) When I come to the Equipboard website, I'd find it easier if you included the articles as a special things. Not Explore > Articles. I would suggest the same for gear. It took some time to find the actual articles site. And when you get to the mobile version, I cannot find the forum page. It only works when I get on "about" site. Then I go to forum. If that can be fixed, I shall be thankful.

4) What about submissions that are wrong and can't be fixed? Like this one : http://equipboard.com/pros/noel-gallagher/cort-g200-electric-guitar. I'm sorry if I'm being boring with Noel Gallagher as an example, but still, this guy serves me big time for submission examples. He played an acoustic Cort, but I can't find the source. He never played the G200. If anyone could help, I think that was done for German "Taff" show. I've got off the point here. Those submissions need to be deleted as soon as possible!

5) Please, let us add the notes on the submissions that don't have any sources!

What even is that? Looks like someone just created the body of a Jaguar, then put one sexy pickup in the middle.

Also, look at this. To the left of the Eventide Space. What is that?

http://www.strymon.net/wp-content/uploads/IMG_4124.jpg

This weird guitar is Harmony Bobkat. St. Vincent is noted to play one. It is one of those Harmony/Kay junkies that are widely used by pros. I mean, there are decent amount of Harmony and Kay users. You have Dan Auerbach, Jack White, basically anyone who's popular in the hipster circle. And they are pretty cheap and if you're in USA, and pretty easy to get them. This looks like a H14 model, because it's single pickup. But if you're in Europe, yeeeah, that's why we have those funky 60's guitars like Hoyer, Hofner, Framus, Hohner...

The pedal is Peterson VSS-C tuner. Petersons are pretty easy to identify because they have the unique design.

Checking the source's reliability

Sweet, thanks for weighing in Jim, I agree w you.

Whoever submits this one, would be cool to grab a screenshot of the comment rather than just link to the youtube video for proof. You can use a service like imgur to easily upload the screenshot, grab the .jpg (or .png) URL to the image and use that as proof on EB.

Actually, I'm going to try contacting mr. Scott. I have no idea how Google+ works, but LinkedIn will do. I hope that we will get a lots of info on NG's gear, becausd that's what we're aiming for!

Anyway, why can't you just upload the photo to the Equipboard? I mean, many forum sites have those possibilities, including the Green Day Community...

I understand about fiddling with knobs, but a comp? It's a fairly set, and forget piece of kit.

nah, you can do some crazy shit with a dynacomp going between lightly compressed boost and heavy compression with lower output, I can see it.... it definitely drives a tube amp or a distortion pedal very differently depending on the relationship between those 2 knobs. I kinda get it. I don't think I would bother, but I get it.

Sorry, but that was actually Boss Dm-2 delay pedal. I haven't seen the photo in a long time. I will post the link later, hold on

You can't have a active circuit with passives as far as I know but I think that you can get a kit that the volume output goes to and works as a boost type of thing, I think jack white had the MXR micro amp circuit built into one of his guitars for a huge boost. On Ebay you can buy kits for not much money uf you're handy with a soldering iron id suggest giving it ago to decide of you like it.

When you say jumbo are you referring to medium jumbo (fender, Gibson etc) or extra jumbo (ESP, Jackson etc) you could try a scalloped fretboard, many guitar stores will do that for you or you could get one of your guitars refretted with the fret wore of your choice

Yes, he had the Micro Amp installed in his Parsons Anniversary Gretsch copy. Oh, and don't forget Dave Grohl, which had his Mxr dyna comp taped to his Gibson RD Artist. I swear that there's a photo somewhere lol ????

Checking the source's reliability

I thought I'd made this thread just to check sources we (or at least I) 'm/are really unsure about. Anyway, here is the case.

I try to do my best for Noel Gallagher's rig, considering he's my favourite artist. Anyway, I did some research on his vocal range and I suddenly came to "Take Me Away" video. Anyway, in the comments section, there is a guy named David Scott, which was an engineer on "Definitely Maybe", which clearly explains how the song was made.

Whaddaya think? Is this source reliable. Here's what he says : "As the engineer who recorded and mixed this track, I can tell you for certain that Noel played both guitars on this record. We used his epiphone (J200 copy) acoustic guitar. The slide was done using a calrec condensor microphone for the slide bar (we tried conventional bottlenecks, beer glasses etc but they weren't right) and recorded with a vintage neumann U87 microphone. It was then processed through a roland space echo to give it the harmonic echo quality that it has. The whole thing was recorded and mixed in less than half an hour. Then we did supersonic.?"

Girls on EB!

Lucian prefers Gold tops and he likes my silver LP as an art object. He does like to strum my old plaintop Japanese double cut LP too. But usually he does not like 58/59 sunbursts. He considers sunburst to be a color like red or blue though. Anything with a gradation is 'burst to him because I own 3 burst instruments and he's been raised around them as objects he can play with whenever he wants (I am not precious with my instruments and I let him tweak synths and beat on guitars as much as he wants, they are his too... meant for making music, not for polishing and admiring... I let my 10 year old nephew play anything he wants when he visits, no fear of chastisements for dropping them... on Lucian's birthday my nephew and my son were jamming out with me between games of competitive ring around the rosey and human-pin bowling... I taught Lucian to carry a bassline and taught my nephew about sympathetic string bending with double stops... his dad Uncle Tom is a heckuva player too). Lucian is fond of concerts on youtube at bedtime whenever daddy doesn't play and sing to him, via appleTV... so he sees lots of amps. He has this thing with my ac4, he always wants me to put t next to my fawn ac30 and he says "daddy amp, baby amp!" and likes to make them hug sort of like me and him. Warms the cockles of my heart, man. Bonding through gear. Doesn't get better.

I don't like any kind of bursts or finishes actually, to be honest. How about something different than Vox? How does he react to Marshalls, Fender, Matchless(es?), Oranges? He must've seen those if he watches concert on YouTube and Apple TV...

Internet colaboration?

anyone get the joke for this tune ? I wrote her in Bm, changed her to Cm so that the relative major is Eb as in EB, EquipBoard???? getit????!!!!

I'm impressed. So, the band should be called the EquipBand? Kinda cool.

Yep, someone should write a musical part to an EquipBoard anthem, I wrote down the textual part. It sucks, but that's what made some bands listenable, like blink-182. Anyway, without hesitation, this is what I came up with.

Ode to the Equipboard:

O, EquipBoard, the most comprehensive gear pages of them all, you are my favourite, you are my wonderwall (no pun intended) I can find the artist's gear, or RIAA certificates and medals, Or those sexy overdrive pedals!

For us, the gear nerds - you are our holy grail, we look forward for every of your e-mail, "Your EquipBoard submissions" or "someone has left a reply" Oh, EquipBoard, you're just so beautiful to my eye.

Your GearIQ rises with the every single gear I add, when you are down, I get mad but who needs relationships when you're there too, and I can spend the Valentine's with you.

On every single media you eared my like and follow, without you, I just feel hollow, I just feel stupid and bored, without the greatest EquipBoard. -----> this one could be chorus

What do you say? If y'all unite and make a song out of this? (If this ode works?)

Oh, and we have to share this with mods asap...

already done... he sees an ac30 on tv and he goes "vox ac30, daddy's amp!" and he can spell one word since he was 15 months, V - O -X, spells vox, daddy. He also knows and SG when he sees one. But he feels they need to be cherry like mine, he hates white SGs.

He also knows angus young, all the beatles, keef, pete Townshend (god he loves the Who), dave Gilmour and Rick Nielsen by sight...

Lucian also really likes Debussy though.... Beethoven less so, I am so let down, but there are too many brass instruments for his taste, "no horns daddy!"

Wo...wait, what kind of TV is that? The one that lets the AC30 commercials on? That is amazing! In Croatia, we only have the store commercials and dishwasher commercials too. There used to be condom commercials, but they were removed later lol.

I have no idea, I don't intend to have kids, but there is a certain thing - they need to be taught about gear. Someone should play instruments when we get old. It's kind of relieving to see that someone raises a kid who listens to The Who. How about black SG's or SG/Les Pauls? Those are beauties! I hated SG Melody Makers as a kid...they are ugly, just like all Melody Makers. Just to see Carl Barat or Joan Jett with that guitar...ugh.

shockingly? Yes, despite societies attempt to discourage women from making music or caring about tech stuff

I thought I wanted a girl, but when I found out I was having a boy I was excited because I knew the world would encourage him to be a gear pyscho like me.... and the daughter I thought I wanted would be encouraged to be a princess! Not a chain smoking rock 'n roll badass. Even my ex-wife, who is a bad-ass by anyone's standards? Not a techy or musicians in any way. More interested in fashion when she's not shooting dope or whatever. If she could focus her attention on rockin'? goddamn, she is such a hardass she could raise one helluva noise.

But still, you can raise your boy as a Vox lover! Just teach him that the alphabet doesn't go like ABC, it goes like AC, and 3 and 0 should be his first numbers. I know, I hardly meet any female gear nerd, even though I'd love to meet someone like those women. Identifying the gear

I have noticed that there are some iconic classic rock players with well-documented gear who have shockingly incomplete equipboard (including some fucking Beatles).... I am working to remedy this miscarriage of gear documentary justice. If anyone sees a guitar god of classic rock fame with an incomplete equipboard please let me know so I can work on it next! Up until I decided to glance at George Harrison's page I assumed the classic guys were all done and done right. Apparently only Jimmy Page is (even Hendrix has holes, but documentary evidence is slow going for him, so much mythology, not enough photos and interviews)

http://equipboard.com/pros/chet-atkins - I have a feeling much of gear he played is left out. I think he has this "Me&My Guitars" book, so someone should check this out - it might have some gear. http://equipboard.com/pros/johnny-cash - It's very hard to find almost anything on his topic, this is a challenge for you. http://equipboard.com/pros/buddy-holly - He was very young when he died, and he didn't use much gear - most of it were Stratocasters. Maybe there is some left out. http://equipboard.com/pros/chuck-berry - Guitars are alright, the only thing missing is basically everything around them. http://equipboard.com/pros/dick-dale http://equipboard.com/pros/mark-knopfler - Amps and effects... http://equipboard.com/pros/allen-collins - There was actually a book that described his gear to the bone...completly broke it down. But I don't know if that's legit what the book says. http://equipboard.com/pros/gary-rossington - Basically, whole Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!

So, the winter vacation just started, and I reached 20,000 gear IQ - hopefully, I somewhat helped Equipboard, but, to be honest - fuck my submissions. They can be incorrect, have a lack of notes or something like that. I'm here because this is possibly the only site that has the somewhat immediate answers, and you don't get answers in a year or two. I tried it with many sites, and they also had no sources, so, this seemed like a nice idea.

One submission that came to my mind is - why don't we interview pros? It is pretty easy to contact them if they have a web page or social media page - or even an email! I interviewed Adam Aymor from Cheap Girls and Peter Holstrom from Dandy Warhols, which are relatively unknown bands, but they have some good songs and would recommend them a listen. Oh, come on, you probably heard "Bohemian Like You" from Dandys. It's still being broadcast from every possible hipster radio station.

Oh, what's the deal with Boss OD-1 pedal that was supposed to be given away? Why don't those people respond? It is quite nice that you actually care about the members of Equipboard - but how do you manage to do something like that? And how did you add all those pros? I mean, there has to be a way, or did you do that manually? How?!

Some kind of pros, like Robert Johnson, which clearly has no evidence of playing something else except things that were aldready added to his Equipboard, should be just called quits. We can't add more than 5 submissions to him, if those 4 (or how much submissions there are) submissions are the only things he played, this should be called off and removed from "incomplete equipboards" section.

And why the fuck does not Narcist become a mod aldready? Or is he one? He is a nice guy, too patient - I can't figure how the heck does he explain the same thing to other members over and over - and it is usually about submissions.

Oh, excuse my bad language, but it is just normal to use words like "fuck" in normal conversation - or? I mean, every single forum has some kind of freedom of speech - as long as there are no any bigot assholes with their racist and homophobic talks. No hate, just the word that was popular and it will still be one. And many songs have this word in it!

Identifying the gear

http://www.annihilatormetal.com/images/guitars/Imgp0962.jpg

I'm having trouble identifying the rack units and pedals in this photo of Jeff Waters with his rig.

PEDALS (L-R) (from the top) 1. ??? 2. Boss CH-1 SUPER Chorus 3. Dunlop DC-Brick Power Supply 4. Electro Harmonix Deluxe Electric Mistress 5. MXR EVH-117 Flanger 6. Boss BF-2 Flanger (why the heck would he have 2 flangers onboard?) 7. MXR EVH90 Phaser 8. MXR Smart Gate 9. Boss OD-1 Overdrive

RACKS (from the bottom) : 1. ??? 2. Line 6 POD PRO XT 3. ??? 4. ??? 5. seems like an Alesis rack, unsure.

Everything else is unknown. Help!
