A very special fuzz. What started as an unhealthy infatuation with Dinosaur Jr. quickly turned into a dream of building a painstakingly accurate replica of J. Mascis's legendary "#2" muff. In the process of the build some of the components fell out of the board and the pedal started making a horrendous splattering texture that bloomed like an atom bomb. I'd never heard anything like it. I was in love - The PAIN switch toggles between that splatter mode and the period correct version of this vintage Ram's Head circuit.

Bob Weil and Visual Sound first introduced the Jekyll & Hyde pedal to the world in 1997. It was the first true dual effect pedal for guitar players, ever. It was an immediate hit and the rest, as they say, is history.

Visual Sound is now TRUETONE, and the new V3 Series Jekyll & Hyde has been re-designed from scratch by Weil and RG Keen to meet the demands of today’s players. With more flexibility, more great tones, and better construction than any of its predecessors, you’re going to love this new incarnation of a historically great pedal.

The distortion channel (a.k.a. "Hyde") is the same great distortion that Hyde was always known for, but with 2 major upgrades. It now includes a Bass knob which interacts with Treble so you can shape your tone precisely. There is also a new Voice switch which allows you to choose between classic open distortion or a more saturated tone.

The overdrive channel (a.k.a. "Jekyll") has changed completely, making it even more compatible with Hyde. Jekyll is now based on our old Open Road pedal, but with added Bass and Clean Mix knobs.

The right channel has pronounced mids without being honky. In addition to Drive, Tone, and Volume knobs, it also has a 3-way Clipping (diodes) switch, a 3-way Bass switch, and a Clean Mix knob. The left channel also has Drive, Tone and Volume knobs, along with a Bass knob, but with flat mids, making it sound very amp-like. The VS-XO is a tone-experimenter’s dream pedal. The sound options are nearly endless.

On top of that, the VS-XO is the first Truetone (formerly Visual Sound) pedal to incorporate True-Bypass. Bob Weil invented foot-switches which look traditional, but interact with gold-plated relays, and will last forever. RG Keen invented a circuit to keep them quiet. You also have the choice of internally switching the Pure Tone buffer on or off with each channel.

If you use a switching system or want to change the order of effects, no problem… separate Ins and Outs allow for that. If you just want to plug one cable in and one out normally, you can do that too. And since we didn’t skimp on anything having to do with reliability, the VS-XO is covered by the Truetone Lifetime Warranty.

The Zap Machine V2 is a dual channel, silicon/germanium hybrid dirt device. It has an extremely wide and dynamic range from near clean boost with the gain at minimum on the low gain Green Channel through gigantic overloaded distortion tones with gain at maximum on the high gain Red Channel. The Bass control adjusts the low frequencies coming into the Zap Machine and the Treble control adjusts the high frequencies coming out. This unique tone arrangement allows for different flavors of boost, drive, distortion and fuzz that are not commonly heard from transistor based dirt devices. It is very “amp-like” in response to picking dynamics, saturation and clean up. With two foot switchable channels of dirt available, the Zap Machine can easily take over the duties of at least 2 or 3 pedals on your pedal board! Leave it on the green channel for your overdrive/boost needs and kick on the red channel for your distortion/fuzz tones. Just like the first version, the Zap Machine V2 features a more rugged, vintage amplifier inspired design with NOS carbon composition resistors and big high voltage caps along with a NOS low gain germanium transistor. The Zap Machine is true bypass, all discrete analog circuitry and handmade one and a time in wintery Akron, Ohio.
