Boys Noize's Keyboards and Synthesizers

"The Elektron Machinedrum, Elektron Octatrack and the [Roland] Jupiter-6 are my favourite hardware machines."

"...right now, also, one of my favorites. Because it's basically any kind of sampler where you put in all your sounds, or you put in loops, or even longer pieces of music. And you can real-time chop them up in here. It's very intuitive. There's a lot of randomness I like about it. This also - similar to the Monomachine - you have 8 tracks where on each track you can program one sequence... it has different FX sections as well, the first which is the most important is the pitching, but also you can choose the start point of the sample. So you can basically choose where the signal should start from the whole audio file. And you can move around, most of the time a lot of cool things happen."

"This is the Alpha 2 - really nice. For instance, what I really love about it is the possibility of making chord sounds. To get like a 90s kind of flavor you go on like an organ and that makes it even nicer. We actually did the track Avalanche with Erol Alkan and Jarvis Cocker with this one. I bought it in Japan I think after I heard one of those bass sounds that I thought I knew from a Timbaland record. The brass sounds are really nice - super warm. And yeah, the chord function is really nice... You can trigger a chord with a single key, so we did basically the entire track on this. It’s totally different to other Junos.”

"At the front is the SH-05 it’s got such a powerful sound. I only got it a couple of months ago and I’ve already done two tracks. The filters are so amazing.”

"There's also a Roland SH-101 with inverted key colours. It has extra filters modded on, I used it on my NERD remix. If I ever want a real good saw sound, this is what I use. It’s fun to trigger it with a drum machine too.”

Boys Noize talks about that despite being able to make the "acid" sound with plugins, the original TB-303 has a character that cannot quite be replicated.

"You can make acid with a lot of plugins too. I think the filters of the 303 are what really make it special. I haven't heard any one going as soft. And then what I like to do is put the 303 through a distortion pedal, which in this case is an OTO pedal."

"My nice ARP 2600, I'm really, really happy. I bought it in L.A. and it was really difficult getting it here, with almost going to prison, but it worked. It works with all the filters and everything work really well. To get a sequence out of it I have meshed it up with an MFB Urzerg."

"At the top of the synth rack is the Juno 106 and everyone has one of these. It was one of my first synths."
