Brad Whitford's Guitars
In this video from Fender, he discusses Fender guitars and this model in particular, American Vintage '65 Stratocaster.
“The Silver Sky is my favourite,” says Whitford. “That’s the one that I sit around and play more than any other. I love the way it feels. To me, he’s taken the Stratocaster but he hasn’t just stuck a different headstock on it. He’s come with all these modern views about how to use the idea of this instrument, and evolve the body, the neck and that sort of thing. It’s Strat-like in its sound, yeah, but it’s not a Strat. It’s kind of created this whole new family of sounds. “I play it every night. I could literally play the whole show with it if I wanted to. But I’ve got all these other pretty guitars that I like to show off.”
According to Premier Guitar's rig rundown, Whitford has the Fender Eric Johnson Stratocaster with DiMarzio hum-cancelling pickups.
In this 2012 photo of Whitford in Epiphone article, he can be seen playing the Epiphone Casino.
"We were kind of replicating personality-wise some of the stuff we did in the '70s. I used to have a '68 Les Paul goldtop P-90 guitar that ended up going by the wayside. I've looked all over to try to find a substitute, and I managed to find another one up in Boston. That guitar was a real go-to for the album."
According to 80's advert from PRS, Whitford played the Custom 22 in advert.
The EVH Ernie Ball Music man can be seen at 1:02 on this video, for Aerosmith's "Crazy". The location of the pickup selector switch near the neck pickup shows that it is not an Ernie Ball Axis, which has it's selector near the volume knob. For example, here is a photo of a stock EVH Ernie Ball. http://www.musicianslibrary.com/machform/data/form_1/files/element_21_b1c86615dd3b960c3700a48e1c41ef9d-28-blueevh.jpg
and here is a photo of a stock Axis https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/static.music-man.com/website/images/instruments/slides-6/slide-3.jpg
Notice especially the location of the selector switch on the video, and on the first picture.
On Gibson's page for the Collectors Choice Brad Whitford Les Paul, it says that Whitford used a 1959 Les Paul.
In this 2014 photo of Whitford, he can be seen playing the D'Angelico EX-DC hollowbody electric guitar.
In this photo, Whitford can be seen playing the burst Gibson ES-335, possibly brand new.
"Also a constant is his McInturff Taurus and Hamer Korina Standard (Explorer), always used somewhere in the set. Basically, he has about 10 guitars he uses every show and he switches them up on different songs.”
According to Premier Guitar, Whitford teamed up with Gibson to work on this guitar. This guitar has Wizz Clone Premium PAF pickups, unlike the original custom-voiced PAF style pickups.
According to Premier Guitar's rig rundown, he also uses this guitar to tour with Derek St. Holmes. This guitar is based on Bonamassa's 1959 blackburst.
