In a live photograph from Eric Clapton's Cream years, he is seen playing a Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cutaway model with a Bigsby, confirming his use of this guitar during that period. The image also features Jack Bruce with a Fender Bass VI.

This is Mark's first Gibson guitar, he bought it in 1971. Mark used it on Cafe Racers and on the first Dire Straits album.

This is what Mark Knopfler said in an old interview: “We played in pubs in London. I just had this thirty-watt amplifier; we used to stick it up on two wooden chairs," he recalls nostalgically. "I used to play a Gibson Les Paul Special with a pick. It was a double-cutaway Les Paul Special that had been refinished black, probably a 1960. I bought it for £80; this would have been around 1971. My friend Steve Phillips and I painstakingly stripped it and got it back to its original cherry finish, and it was everything to me. I don't know whether I slept with it, but it wasn't far off. I absolutely adored it, and still do. I used it in the Straits when we started. I was actually just looking at a picture of us when we played on Clapham Common [London, 11th September 1977] for Charlie Gillett, and there I am playing the Special. So that's where Gibson started in my life, and that guitar will always have a special place in my heart.”

Chris Shiflett is using this guitar in the Foo Fighters: Live at Wembley Stadium DVD in 2008. He is using this guitar in the song "Long Road to Ruin". You can see him using it at around the 2:42 mark.

At 1:01:39 of Yes' "Going for the One Sessions" tapes, Howe can be seen playing a Gibson Les Paul Junior Special Double Cut.

Jason White's guitar tech, Chris, says that this 1950's Les Paul is his main guitar for the set. This guitar has two p-90 pickups and is mostly original. He has been seen playing this guitar since the American Idiot tour.

In a "Rig Rundown" video by Premier Guitar on YouTube, Rick Beato is shown using a Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cutaway.

This Les Paul Special Double Cutaway is Owned by Nancy Wilson of Heart

Serial: 9 9277 There are chips, scratches, and checking throughout the finish. The pickguard was removed at some point and the outline can be clearly seen in the finish. The pickguard is no longer with the guitar at all. The back cavity cover plate has been removed leaving the electronics exposed. The hardware is fairly tarnished. The input jack is a bit scratchy and will likely have to be cleaned and or resoldered. Overall, the guitar could benefit from a general setup and cleaning as the frets are a bit grimey and the pots are scratchy. There are dings and chips on the headstock, some of which have been touched up with black paint. The tuners have been replaced and you can see the outline of where the old ones existed as well as the original screw holes. A brass nut has been installed. There appears to have been a neck break, as you can see the refinish job at the heel of the neck. The neck break must have been pretty extensive because in between the fretboard and neck pickup there is a strip of plastic nailed to the body almost as if to conceal something. Below the neck pickup there has also been a chunk of wood set in the body. All of this is likely related to the repair. After all of this is said and done, the guitar still functions great and the electronics sound fantastic! After all, these types of breaks are quite common with these older Gibsons.
