Dan Auerbach's Gear
In an article by Christina Vinson for The Boot, Dan Auerbach is pictured using a Vox Python strap.
At the beginning of this video, Dan can be seen playing a short organ take on the Nord Electro 2. This is pretty odd, because it's no vintage instrument.
RADAR sounded fantastic, just right off the bat it sounded incredible compared to Pro Tools. No doubt about it. The difference wasn’t subtle, it was real obvious, even to beginner’s ears. It just sounds really deep and three–dimensional.
Here is Dan at The Wiltern on Sept 19, 2019 playing "Howlin' for You" on a Gretsch Bo Diddley with a Bigsby tailpiece and slightly modified knobs. This show kicked off their 2019 "Let's Rock" tour after an almost 5-year hiatis.
Dan Auerbach uses the Analog Man Boss TR-2/Super Tremolo pedal, as shown in a photo of his pedalboard taken by RyannayR22 on Flickr after a show at the Beacon Theatre.
In a photo from a user-uploaded gallery on Wordpress, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys is shown using a Sitori Sonics Reel Repeat delay pedal.
As seen in the second 0:18 of the Brothers Deluxe Remastered 10th Anniversary Edition, one of the photos contained in vinyl shows Dan Auerbach using a rickenbacker 4000 bass guitar in a studio recording.
Specified on the official Foxrox artist page.

"I use this one here and just keep it in my drawer, and I stand here and tune and change buttons because it's patched in remotely to the one out on the stage. But the buttons were too close here for Dan because he's singing and not really looking down there. I had a custom one made of stainless steel by a fabricator in Akron. It's all designed to keep the buttons spaced out. So once the box was built it was shipped to Ron Minelli at RJM, and he made custom electronics to fit inside of it based on the design I gave him, which is pretty much the same as the RJM," says Dan Auerbach's guitar tech about the RJM MasterMind MIDI Foot Controller.
"We have Palmer devices on all the amplifiers that are up there. The three that are on Dan's rig," says Dan Auderbach's guitar tech about the Palmer PGA-04 ADIG-LB Speaker Simulator. Dan's rig contains two ADIG-LBs.
We spotted a Palmer Speaker Simulator PDI-03 in Dan Auerbach's rig.
"We have three amps that are on all the time. They're split inside my rach here. The pedals are in this rack with the RJM Loop Effect Gizmo. So they're split back there but they're on all the time. This one goes through a tape delay… The pedalboard is patched into this," explains Dan Auerbach's guitar tech about the RJM Music Effect Gizmo.
In this video, Auerbach can be seen using the Dobro in a performance of "Little Black Submarines," before switching to his Guild S-200 Thunderbird.
From the sennheiserusa Instagram account, quoting Front of House Engineer for The Black Keys Jason M. Tarulli. Tarulli says:
“I went for a combo of e 906 and MD 421 for Auerbach’s main guitar rig, with the 906 placed near the centre of the cone to get all the mid/hi-mid details plus the crunch and fuzz that comes from the Marshall amp and Fender guitar, and the 421 placed midway or nearer to the outer edge of the cone to get the low-mid warmth" (Oct 2014)
In an article for Premier Guitar: "Auerbach uses this guitar on the acoustic intro to 'Little Black Submarines' off of El Camino. The brass body gives the guitar a more subdued sound so Auerbach prefers to use this on the beginning of the song rather than a traditional acoustic guitar."
Dan uses a Boss TU-3 tuner, according to his rig rundown, at 13:51.
Dan uses a Lehle splitter, as seen in this rig rundown, at 16:03.
Dan is seen here playing a Gibson SG Junior. However, this one has got a tremolo attached.
Additional photos: Unknown show, 2009.
Here, in an early picture of Dan, he is playing a Airline Town and Country
In this photo, Dan Auerbach can be seen playing a Buck Owens American Guitar in a live performance with The Arcs, at the NPR Tiny Desk.
In the photos shown, we can see Dan playing what seems to be a 1969 Gibson Les Paul (because of the headstock shape and knobs) in the coachella music festival in 2009. In a interview Dan once said that he used a 1953 gold top Les Paul to record the "El Camino" album, but the one in the pictures above couldn't be a 50s model.
A four-knob version with triangular knobs is featured in this MusicRadar article
“This is my other octave fuzz - I’ve got three octave fuzzes on the board and they’re all different styles. The octave fuzz side on the Face Lift is one of my favourite fuzz pedals, ever. Just the octave fuzz side, though. It’s fucking awesome. My cousin, Robert Quinewho played for Lou Reed and Richard Hell and The Voidoids, first told me about Prescription Electronics pedals, back when I was 18. I probably have every pedal that company has ever made and they’re all great.”
During the Rubber Factory era, a photo taken on June 18, 2010, shows Dan Auerbach with a Fender Jerry Donahue Telecaster equipped with a Bigsby.
In a feature on Pedalmaniacs, Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys is shown using the BBE Supa-Charger Power Supply for his effects pedals.
In the YouTube video "Dan Auerbach - The Prowl," Dan Auerbach can be seen using a Vox Continental organ.
"We have the smaller PDI-09 little box that we use on the keyboard amp because he plays guitar, that's John Wood. He plays a little bit of guitar on a few songs," explains Dan Auerbach's guitar tech about the Palmer PDI-09 'The Junction' Passive DI Box.
In this interview with Music Radar, Dan Auerbach says the following about the GigRig G2:
“Everything goes through that, except for the wah. It’s essentially a patchbay for my pedals and it’s easy for me to understand and work around. It’s made working in the studio with guitar pedals a lot of fun. The best tools just get out of the way and let you do your thing.”
In this 2019 Premier Guitar rig rundown, a TFL5005D Fender Bandmaster is specifically shown and mentioned as an important part of Dan's rig.
From the personal collection of Dan Auerbach as found on guitars.com

Dan Auerbach uses the Universal Audio Starlight Echo, as seen in a photo from his DJ set at The Dive Motel on April 29, 2023.
