RADAR sounded fantastic, just right off the bat it sounded incredible compared to Pro Tools. No doubt about it. The difference wasn’t subtle, it was real obvious, even to beginner’s ears. It just sounds really deep and three–dimensional.

"I should take a Pro Tools course, because I'd like to at least be able to sit there and do a little fiddling on my own, if I wanted to. I think I was quite honorable back in the day when Pro Tools came out, because so many producers learned it on an artist's budget. I didn't want to do that because I felt it was immoral. I stayed pretty Luddite and analog. I initially went with [iZ Technologies'] RADAR, which was like a digital version of what I did already [with tape]. I mix with a computer now, but I always come through the desk because I like the sound of it."

Though he prefers to work to tape, Johns will always make safety recordings to a digital format, preferring IZ's RADAR over Pro Tools. "It's a bit more natural-sounding to me. Pro Tools is OK, but it can be quite 'sharp'. This is where I'm going to get myself into all kinds of trouble, but Pro Tools should be called Amateur Tools really. Because the truth of the matter is that the only reason why that's become as successful as it has is because it allows people that can't play and can't sing to make records.
