Gem Archer's Guitars
Gem Archer used Non-Reversed Firebirds during his time with Oasis.
First one, which was red, was used when Archer started out in the Oasis, around 2000. It also has been seen in performance of "Go Let It Out", which was the first performance of the particular song ever made. This performance happened at Jools Holland's 2000 Oasis performance. And it was also used in "Go Let It Out" music video. Also, this guitar was used on Wembley 2000 performance, again most notably for "Go Let It Out". He continued using this guitar, and it was also seen 8 years later, at the Wembley 2008 performance, most notably for "Cigarettes and Alcohol". This guitar was also used with Beady Eye - most notably for "Man Of Misery", which was performed on June 12, 2011. Of course, this is not the only performance and only song he played the Firebird. He also played it for "In The Bubble With A Bullet" live at Heineken Music Hall in 2011 and many more performances.
Anthony Chabala, administator of Gem Archer Gear, writes :
This vintage Gibson Non-Reverse Firebird has seen quite a bit of action over the years and seems to be Gem's "go-to" guitar. The only difference between what is in his hands now versus his Oasis days is the addition of chrome pickup covers on top of the Dimarzio humbuckers. He also added a "Bad Ass" bridge. Proudly, I have had the opportunity to have this guitar in my hands, and I found the neck to be slightly slimmer than that of my custom shop version of the same guitar.
Second one, tobaccoburst, was used during the modern days with Oasis, and it was used during Wembley 2008. concert, most notably for "Slide Away". About the tobaccoburst one, Gem Archer Gear writes :
This vintage Non-Reverse Firebird has also been seen in Gem's hands throughout the Oasis years and leading up to present day. It has three P-90 Soapbar pickups, and from my vantage point, Gem always plays it through the bridge pickup.
At 2:22 of this video, Gem plays rhythm guitar with an Epiphone Sheraton in "Lyla".
At 1:53 minute mark, Gem is using an Epiphone Casino during "Who Feels Love".
He used another Epiphone Casino with Beady Eye days. He can be seen playing the vintage Epiphone Casino in this video.
In this photo, Archer shows his Firebirds, and the Firebird III is visible on the left side.
At 1:31 in this video, Gem can be seen using a Telecaster for "Wonderwall".
He used this guitar for mostly older Oasis stuff, around 2005.
At 0:49 Gem uses an Epiphone Riviera for "Rock N Roll Star" by Oasis.
At 1:42 minute mark of the same show, Archer is visible playing the Riviera for Don't Look Back In Anger.
In this photo, Archer is playing Rickenbacker 330 Rose Morris from 1997.
Gem Archer plays Trini Lopez since 2008 with Oasis and now with Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, where it is his main guitar
Just like Paul Weller gave Noel Gallagher his white Rickenbacker 330, and gave Steve Cradock his black Rickenbacker 330 featured on The Jam's single sleeves, Weller gave Gem Archer his Rickenbacker 360F following their acoustic tour together. Gem took this prized Rickenbacker to master craftsman Philppe Dubreuille because according to Philippe, "Gem loved the guitar, but he thought the neck was too thin. So I made him a custom guitar that looked and played similar, but with a Les Paul, baseball bat-like neck." As you can see, all the components are the same, but the body and neck are custom made to Gem's liking.
In this photo from Demotix, Gem Archer is seen playing an Epiphone FT-79 Texan during an acoustic set with Beady Eye at Rough Trade East in London.
In the "Mouse In a Hole" music video by Heavy Stereo, Gem Archer can be seen playing an Epiphone EJ-200 acoustic guitar.
At 12:00 in this concert video, a clear shot can been seen of Gem's Les Paul.
Another of his Les Paul Standards was featured on "Chinese Burn" music video, done by Heavy Stereo. He can be seen playing this Les Paul throughout the video.
At 6:01 Gem uses Noel's ES-355 in this acoustic performance.
In this photo, Gem can be seen using a Telecaster.
This guitar was the guitar he used for Beady Eye performances. As attached, this guitar was used to play "Wind Up Dream" at Casino Paris, which happened on March 13, 2011. This guitar was also used for "Sons Of The Stage", which was performed at Empress Ballroom, on November 11, 2011.
Gem has said that his fondest guitar shopping memory is when his now deceased, loving uncle took him to get his first Rickenbacker. This smaller model, made from 1962-1984, might very well take him back to those days. He plays the pentatonic-lick intro to "Wind Up Dream" with a capo up high on the neck, always in the bridge position. On multiple occasions, Gem has had to hold off on the opening riff to re-tune this fickle guitar.
This some sort of wine red Gibson SG Custom appeared in the music video for "Where Did It All Go Wrong?". This could actually be the only time this guitar has been seen with Archer. This guitar looks a lot like 1991 Gibson SG Custom '67 reissue, but there is not too many shots in music video to confirm that.
"I also use [...] a Paisley Telecaster, which I got back in 2001. It’s funny – Noel and I got Paisley Teles on the same day, without knowing it, and then turned up at the gig with them! They're brilliant guitars and Mexican-made, so they only cost us 500 quid."
Used when he played in the band Whirlpool. Picture taken in 1991 by legendary author Mick Mercer.
Used for only one song, but brilliant tone anyway. This is a venture from his Oasis days of using a beautiful Taylor 12-string.
Further, the Gem Archer Gear site says that this guitar was used for "For Anyone". The Taylor 12-string was used for "Songbird", most notably for Oasis Manchester 2005 concert.
Used while in the band The Contenders. Pick up a copy of Mick Mercer's book Gem Archer to find pictures of Gem wearing a white, one-piece jump-suit! Photo by Mick Mercer from 1988.
I've seen Gem using this live for a Noel Gallagher gig in Amsterdam. Looks like it's in a few pictures too. He also used a white Strat with Oasis to play 'She's Electric' on the Ten Years of Nouse and Confusion Tour.
