Gibson Non-Reverse Firebirds: everything you need to know | Guitar World

guitarworld.com

The Gibson Firebird Non-Reversed is a unique twist on a classic design, aimed at resolving some of the original's shortcomings. While it retains the iconic look, the non-reverse models are easier to manufacture and handle, thanks to a flatter body and glued-in neck, making them more accessible in price. However, they lack the neck-through construction of the original, which might disappoint purists. The build quality and aesthetic appeal remain strong, but the non-reverse models didn't quite capture the market's imagination, leading to their discontinuation. Overall, a mixed bag for those seeking a blend of history and practicality.

The Big Review: Gibson Custom ’63 Firebird V & ’65 Non-Reverse Firebird V

guitar.com

Gibson's Custom '63 Firebird V and '65 Non-Reverse Firebird V are stunning showcases of vintage aesthetic and modern craftsmanship. The guitars boast impressive tonal versatility, with the reverse Firebird offering a richer sonic palette while the Non-Reverse model provides a more familiar feel with its enhanced balance. Despite minor finish imperfections and the hefty price tag, they deliver a unique blend of style and substance that collectors and players will appreciate. Though their design quirks, like neck dive on the reverse model, may not be for everyone, the allure of their rare finishes and historical significance makes them standout pieces.

Fantastic guitar, a real collector's item. Only 300 have been made! Mine is for sale!

The guitar's body is crafted from solid Grade-A mahogany, and dressed in an authentic high-gloss nitrocellulose finish in Vintage Sunburst. Its quarter-sawn, Grade-A mahogany neck is carved to a thin '60s profile and glued in. Beyond the PLEK-cut Corian nut, it carries a traditional "hawk's head" six-in-line headstock with high-quality Mini Grover kidney button tuners, while down at the body end a Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece—considerable upgrades from original components—help to ensure optimum resonance and sustain, while facilitating pinpoint intonation adjustments. With such a solid foundation beneath it, the piece de resistance of the Firebird Studio's tonal arsenal lies in its complement of three great new Gibson pickups and hotrodded electronics to make the most of their sonic potential. A trio of Gibson USA's revolutionary new Tapped P-90 pickups provides all the fat snarl, crunch and bite that vintage P-90s are known for, with the option of the brighter, twangier sound of a thinner single-coil pickup accessed via the push-pull switch on each pickup's independent volume control. Not "split coil" switching as used on humbucking pickups, the switch on each of these single-coil Tap P-90 pickups accesses a genuine tap wired into the coil windings of each unit, grounding off part of its output to produce a brighter, more focused tone when the switch is pulled. Combine this with the push-pull switch on the master tone pot which puts the middle pickup out of phase when combined with either the bridge or neck unit, and five-way switching to access bridge/bridge+middle/middle/neck+middle/neck pickup selections (either tapped or full), the Firebird Studio offers an unprecedented tonal range.

Awesome Guitar

got mine while on tour in Nashville in a pawn shop. My is a fiesta red with my "Free Rider" Firebird Mini Humbuckers in them, a bigsby b5, and a Harmonica bridge and brass nut. It also has Coil Splits and In/Out of phase switching and a killswitch. I use it for our cover of Nirvana's "Lithium" and "Breed".

at 2:21 in the video you can see J sitting next to a well P90'd non-reversed Firebird,it can be assumed that it's J's for two reasons

  1. Lou is next to J playing a Jazzmaster, obviously J's Jazzmaster, why would Lou borrow J's guitar if he already had a Firebird with him?
  2. I had a bud who told me J used to play Firebirds occasionally.
