in an interview for Vice's Noisey blog Carpenter discussed his gear at length starting with his first score:

*Do you remember any of the equipment you used on Dark Star (1974)? *

Oh boy. I don’t remember the exact name of the equipment, but I remember that you had to stick these pins in the thing, like wooden pins that made a sound. You changed the frequency or something like that. I don’t remember the name of it.

"My studio was called Pi West, and the initial bank of keyboards there when John and I started out working together were the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 Rev3, a Prophet 10, an early ARP Quadra and two ARP Avatars — one Avatar was integrated with a Sequential Circuits Model 700 programmer — an ARP Sequencer, an Oberheim Four Voice, and an Emulator 1 sampler. I also had the Linn LM1 drum machine, which drove our main arpeggiator, the ARP Sequencer, using clock pulses."

Half way through the itnerview when Carpenter is asked about a favorite synthesizer he mentions the Korg Triton work station without hesitation. Hey, that rhymes....

The score was digitally recorded using Alesis ADATs and BRC and John Hardy microphone preamps. Microphones included AKG414, Shure VP88 and SM57.
