John Dwyer's Gear
John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees can be seen here demoing the Fuzz War. [Death By Audio] worked with John to create Fuzz War Overload which takes their extremely popular Fuzz War to the next level.
"I ask John to instruct me on how to make a Coachwhips-patented microphone. He tells me that it involves 'two screws; you just put the two wires on the two screws.' 'And then hook it to a normal microphone?” I ask. 'No,' he says, 'you just cut one end of a guitar cable, fray out the wires and put it on there. I’ve gotten better at making them over the years. Now when I make them they last more than one show.' At this point, you might be wondering where this endless supply of telephones comes from. 'Hotel rooms,' John says, 'that’s why every time a place puts us up in a hotel, we’re usually not invited back.'" - https://www.slugmag.com/music-features/whip-it-good-prepare-to-be-dominated-by-the-coachwhips/
John Dwyer can be seen using a modified red Kay Vanguard live. The guitar has a Seymour Duncan Invader pickup in the bridge and the stock Kay gold foil in the neck. Both the volume and tone controls have been removed, and the neck pickup is dead. The Invader simply runs directly to the output.
He uses a blackface and a silverface Music Man tilted horizontally and stacked on top of each other
John Dwyer can be seen using a green Burns Double 6 on multiple occasions (example: https://youtu.be/0dcUzAcVvlg).

John uses this pre amp on his vocals. Apparently he swears by it as a vocal pre amp, but Ive heard its great for guitar as well. You can catch glimpses of it in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u73AGFGipA8

well it's proof enough 'cause ya know it's Dwyer's signature pedal designed and built for him but just so ya know for sure,it's seen onstage in this here video beside Dwyer's mic stand at all times.
recently purchased by John Dwyer from Music Go Round, which isn't surprising because ya know...fuzz into treble boost is kinda his deal.
at 1:48 in this video, John can be seen adjusting his space echo sitting on top of two blackface twin reverb amps.

John can be seen using an old SG style Gibson Melody Maker throughout their recent rehearsal video. It looks like he's modded it with 2 Electrical Guitar Company Single Coils or some brand of P90s. The color is Pelham Blue, which ages into this green-ish color due to the metallics in the paint.
At 3:34 in this video a Critter & Guitari Organelle can be seen amongst John's Pocket Piano and Teenage Enginering OP-1.
Seen here is John Dwyer's synth setup, including his Mellotron micro (how cool is that!?!)

It was said in this Pitchfork article that JPD mainly uses this synth on the first Damaged Bug record "Hubba Bubba" and probably on the later ones too.
You can see the Arturia Microbrute situated among John's synth set up a few times throughout the video, particularly at 10:13. He's not playing it during the mentioned time stamp but it's clearly visible under his right arm.
John Dwyer incorporates the MXR Phase 95 into his setup, adding essential swooshy modulation to his synths, as shown in the user-uploaded photo on Imgur.
