Mick Thomson's Other Gear
Mick Thomson used EMG pickups for a long time before switching to Seymour Duncan Blackouts.
“They’re extremely quiet, they’re extremely clean and they have a lot more tone than the typical active pickup. They sound more real. The harmonics are richer. It’s a bigger sound across a wider range of frequencies.”
“I had them tighten up the bottom because tuning low like we are, you don’t need that lower ‘woof,’” Mick says. “And I had the top end adjusted a little bit for more cut without being harsh or scratchy. They’re extremely quiet, they’re extremely clean and they have a lot more tone than the typical active pickup. They sound more real. The harmonics are richer. It’s a bigger sound across a wider range of frequencies.”
His signature model for one year had AHB-1 set before he got his signature set of pickups.
In the included photo from Fishman of Mick with his ESP Eclipse we can make out that both the neck pickup and bridge pickup are Fluence Moderns.
Mick Thomson of Slipknot signed with ESP, and Fishman Fluence back in 2023, and as of recent has been seen sporting signature Fluence pickups.
To quote Thomson, "My pickups were tuned in a studio, and then tested on the road, and then tuned a little bit more. The end result being both musical and face melting. Extra attention was given to the low mids to keep it big, but tight. Voiced to cut through a mix, but never be shrill. Just could not be happier with how they turned out."
