I like the tightness of the active pickups, but need a lot of personality. I tried a few different pickups and decided to go with the DiMarzio D Activator pickups. They have the tightness of active pickups, but the personality of passive pickups.

This was an auction for Richard's main guitar in the early days of Rammstein, the 901. This was used to record Herzeleid, and possibly Sehnsucht. It was used extensively until 1997, when he began using an ESP KH-2 for drop D tunings and the 901 for standard tunings, and then replaced by a 2nd KH-2. He then "revived" the guitar in the early 2000s by adding a white pickguard and installing EMG pickups, using it for songs that required alternate tunings like Mein Herz Brennt.
Richard also has a 2nd 901 that was used extensively during the 1997 leg of the Sehnsuct tour and in the music video for the song Engel.
Normally what I do, I have one amp that I use very regularly, and it’s the Mesa Boogie MK II C+ which is like one of those Holy Grail amps. I love that amp. I used it on the new Rammstein record along with a Friedman amp which I like too for some of the crunchy sounds.

“I mainly recorded everything clean and then DI the signal later on through effects. I tend to use plugins more than outside gear anyway because I find it easier to change the configurations. But there is one thing I discovered last year, which is the Plasma Pedal… it just has this great fuckin’ fuzz sound.”
