What pedal completes you?

Gotta go a bit more boutique on my end and say that, for me, its a tie between the OBNE Sunlight and the Beautiful Noise When the Sun Explodes. They're sun weird and creative reverb pedals that just bring out something in the way I think and play. Plus, both can sometimes get out of control and take on a life unto themselves.

Help decyphering pickup wires

On the topic of guitar renovations, I recently got my hands on a Gibson Dirty Fingers Plus pickup, and am trying to wire it into a new guitar without the quick connect system. However, there is almost no info on Dirty Fingers Plus pickups on the internet, not to mention the color coding of the leads. Can anyone help with this?

https://ibb.co/L14MWk6

I think the yellow wire may be the grounding wire, since the yellow insulation only extends partway down the wire. The others i have no clue about.

Can a 0.1uf cap be used by itself (i.e. no resistor) to create a treble bleed?

I am working on modding my guitar, and was wondering if I could use a 0.1 uf cab by itself to connect the two hot terminals for a treble bleed circuit, without the use of a commonly used 150k resistor.

Your Absurd Guitar Designs

https://ibb.co/hL1GNCT

As opposed to the last post, this instrument is changed up out the wazoo. It has a Fernandes sustainer in the neck, and the toggle switch on the lower horn has been moved, in order for a Buckethead-style kill switch to be accessed in the strumming region. The most noticeable feature are the arcade style buttons on the lower end of the body, which function as a bluetooth comparable midi controller, with octave up and down buttons on the side. I was inspired to design this after watching a video by MerwinMusic on the topic, and wondered how the design would look on an Explorer.

This Explorer just became an experiment of how many features I could throw on to the face of a guitar. I'm sure that all of these electronics could all fit in an explorer style body, but the whole back might have to be routed out, to the point where it would basically just be a glorified acoustic.

This design I came up with is the Blue Rose Les Paul. Designed this mostly for the aesthetic of Silver hardware, MOP binding, and a finish that looks like you're looking at the top of a blue rose. The instrument would, for all intents of purpose, be a '59 spec'd Les Paul, just with an eye catching finish.

Don't know if there's a thread already for this, but I wanted to create one. I always love to see absolutely banana's ideas for instruments, good or bad, so this thread is for those instruments that may never see the light of day, or maybe, ones that, against all sane reason, have materialized.

'Bass Guitar' Guitar Amp

Fender Bassman amps, over the years, have become renowned for their ability to handle both guitar and basses. Maybe you might want to give that a try and see how it stacks up against a Deluxe 'verb.

Guitar Stand for Playing Position

This is the type I've used for years:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GtrStd--on-stage-stands-xcg-4-classic-guitar-stand

Sweetwater has a decently large section of stands that may fit what you're looking for. Theres some A frames, for a bit more compact storage: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GtrStdSm--on-stage-stands-gs7462b-a-frame-guitar-stand

Or, if you're not a fan of the charming "black aluminum rods and foam" aesthetic, that theres this pricer A frame:

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/1401Stand--taylor-guitar-stand-brown-danish-beechwood

Here's a link to the full selection of stands avaliable. There's not too many, but hopefully something they have can help you out. https://www.sweetwater.com/c935--Guitar_Stands?ost=

Has anyone tried those Online Guitar Courses?

Mainly, I wanted to ask about these online courses. Sorry for complaining a ton about my hands acting weird before I've hit the age of 35.

5yabout 5 years ago

Has anyone tried those Online Guitar Courses?

Let me start by stating that I am not a beginner when it comes to guitar; I've been playing for about 8 years now, which is not long for a lot of people, but is certainly more than most beginners. However, I still feel like I constantly make beginner level mistakes, and more recently, I've been feeling like I've been backsliding in terms of progress and technical skills. I've tried various stretches before and after I practice, I've continuously tried to learn new songs, I've even tried taking a two day break from practice to see if that was the problem. So far, nothing has stopped this regression of guitar playing ability. So, I was wondering, do the guitar courses that are constantly advertised on youtube and other sites (taught by people like Tyler Larson, Rob Scallon, Brandon D'eon, etc) really help as much as they say they do? I know that in person instruction is generally better, but I have been continuously working my current teacher/friend, and they haven't been of much help.

What kind of guitar can cats play? And which audio amplifiers should I connect to?

Of the cat's I know, many of them are Prince fans, and are especially fond of his Hohner Tele.

Ibanez UB804 "Upswing"

I don't know much in the way of brands, but I am aware of a few things you may want to think about when buying a bow. Due to the Ibanez UB804 having a shorter scale length than a full sized (4/4) upright bass, you may want a smaller bow (more in the range of a 1/4 sized bow). Next, there's the frog, which is the area you grip. The two "schools" of frogs are french and german, and depending on which one you pick, it will change the way you hold the bow, so pick whichever one looks or feels the most comfortable. Lastly, there's the matter of Rosin; a bow and a bass on their own will not produce the sound you want. Rosin is essentially old tree sap that you rub on the hairs of the bow, which, due to the stickiness, will help provide friction between the bow and the string, producing the powerful sounds the bass is associated with. Back when I played bass, I used Pop's Bass Rosin, since the generic rosin I was using didn't provide enough grip. In terms of the hairs, you're going to want to go for real horse hair, not just weird fake stuff. It doesn't matter the color of the hair, to my knowledge.

There's also the matter of materials, but that is an area in which I am not qualified to talk about.

Sorry I couldn't think of any specific bows, but hopefully this could help narrow down the search.

Opinions on Harley Benton

The other LP DC JR i'm looking at is the Vintage V130, which has fewer color options and is double the price, but if that is because it is made "more ethically", i would be willing to pay that. $400 is still relatively cheap for a guitar.

Opinions on Harley Benton

Recently,I've been looking around at various Les Paul Double Cut Junior offerings, and the cheapest of the bunch easily is Harley Benton. They have a significant variety of colors for the instrument (I love the Pelham blue finish), and the 22 reviews are mostly positive. I wanted to see if anyone else on this site has had experience with either this specific instrument, or Harley Benton in general. I was also wondering if anyone knows about the production of these instruments (i.e., if the instruments were made using slave or child labor).

Small rig ideas

Some of the Danelectro Food Series pedals can go for about $50, and aren't half bad for their value/age. I've also heard good things about the "Fab" series Danelectro put out.

Guitar Warmups

Thanks, man! I'll be sure to try these! I will admit, I do overlook stretching before practice a bit myself, so I'll be sure to work on that as well.

Help choosing a bridge pickup

I've been thinking about building a guitar, and am at a standstill when it comes to deciding on a bridge pickup. I'm stuck between the Dimarzio Super 2, Dimarzio Notorious Minibucker, and Seymour Duncan Antiquity P90. I'm hoping to make the guitar versatile, but I personally mostly play Classic and Math Rock, and Alternative, with a hint of Metal. I'm panning to make the mid and neck p'ups Seymour Duncan Five-Two Strat's.

Guitar Warmups

I feel that, as of late, my guitar warmup routine has been getting stale. So, just throwing it out there, what kinds of guitar warmups are your favorites, or what warmups do you think have helped to improve your technique the most? They could be for picking, fingerstyle, tapping, etc; whatever warmups you want to share.

best shred pickups

The first thing that came to my mind was the DiMarzio Utopia Pickups, since they are literally designed in collaboration with Steve Vai, and are used in his Ibanez PIAs. However, even without the (fantastic looking) pickup covers, they can still be a bit pricey. The DiMarzio Evolution's are what Vai uses in his JEM7VP, and the DiMarzio Gravity Storms (kickass name) are used in the JEM77P. Both of those are a bit cheaper than the Utopias.

Jay Turser Custom Shop how good are guitars?

Can't speak for the custom shop, but the standard JT-300 I've had for about 5 years has held up surprisingly well. It's a pretty good quality affordable guitar.

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

+1 to this disciplined approach.

I second that statement.

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

You didn't come across like that, don't worry. I was just trying to throw in my 2 cents, without having a significant basis of knowledge to draw from, or thinking about the question critically enough.

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

Guess I hadn't thought about self-teaching in that way. I'm not the brightest bulb on the site, especially when it comes to theory.

Oh no! Too much pressure! AHHHHHHHH!

Unless you want to make Jazz, in which case, theory is all but a requirement.

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

My point is, It's great to know theory, just don't feel pressured into learning it.

5yover 5 years ago

Is it necessary for a musician to know the theory?

Theory can help to understanding the music you make on a more comprehensive level, but I wouldn't call it necessary, especially in today's music world. From what I've, people like Hendrix, Clapton, Bowie, and even Prince were self taught, and not educated in music theory. I'm not sure how true that is, but it at the least makes for great stories.

Hi! Can you tell me what kind of bass guitar the bass player has in this video?

That's a Gibson EB-1, a decently old bass guitar from the 50's, and the first bass guitar the company ever produced

5yover 5 years ago

Can you recommend any good cheap Stratocaster

I've used the JT-300 for years now, and all i've had to do to keep it sounding good is replace the output jack once. Other than that, a great cheap strat.

What Guitar He Uses In This Video?

Looks to me like a Fender Strat, although the quality of the video is a bit low. Looks like the headstock is the right shape, but any decal on said headstock is too difficult to make out.

Please advise an electric guitar similar in sound to the Gibson Vibrola

Are you referring to something that sounds similar to a Gibson SG with a Vibrola, or a trem system that sounds/feels similar to the VIbrola trem system?

Hello, help me find an inexpensive analog of this guitar

https://www.thomannmusic.com/harley_benton_dc_600_vi_vintage_series.htm

The version they have is pretty close, but it's missing the Vibrola. Cheapest version of the instrument i've seen so far, though.

Hello, help me find an inexpensive analog of this guitar

I found a listing for this style of SG of dhgate, but i can't speak for the quality of said instruments, nor the ethicality of the production, as they come from china.

https://www.dhgate.com/product/1963-sg-custom-classic-white-electric-guitar/523430415.html?f=bm%7cGMC%7cpla%7c10936260131%7c108807309058%7c523430415%7cpla-297845415828%7c113003009%7cUS%7cac_dc%7cc%7c2%7c&utm_source=pla&utm_medium=GMC&utm_campaign=ac_dc&utm_term=523430415&gclid=Cj0KCQiA6t6ABhDMARIsAONIYyyufiFhtz2vK1ykZoxVepSTgtiB_yAQTKUsEY7YlMS9X7f4KhB-EyQaAgcGEALw_wcB

Also found one with a significant price drop (not cheap, but not a bad discount):

https://reverb.com/item/36495905-gibson-custom-1963-sg-custom-classic-white-gloss-w-maestro-vibrola-serial-091811-used

Otherwise, it's hard to find a quality white three pickup SG style guitar with a Vibrola for very cheap.

Maybe try the JHS: Legends of Fuzz series. All are $180, and the Bender, Crimson, and Smiley are all based on Fuzz pedals from that era ('72 Univox Super-Fuzz, '73 MKIII Tonebender, '69 Silicon Arbiter Fuzz)
