Founded in 1988 by Wolfgang Düren in the town of Waldorf near Bonn, Germany, Waldorf Music carries forward the legacy of PPG's pioneering wavetable synthesis. The company's first product, the Microwave rackmount synthesizer (1989), established Waldorf as a leading force in wavetable and digital synthesis. The massive Waldorf Wave followed in 1993, offering up to 120 voices of wave-scanning and resynthesis power. In 1999, Waldorf expanded into virtual analog territory with the Q polyphonic synthesizer.
Now headquartered in Remagen, Germany, Waldorf's product line spans hardware synthesizers, software plugins, and Eurorack modules. The Blofeld desktop module and keyboard combine the sound engines of the Microwave and Q lines in an affordable package, while the flagship Quantum and Iridium family represent the company's most advanced digital/analog hybrid instruments. Other notable hardware includes the Streichfett string synthesizer, the M wavetable synthesizer, the Pulse analog monosynth, and the Kyra — the first fully FPGA-powered synthesizer. Waldorf also offers a range of software instruments including the Nave, PPG Wave 3.V, Largo 2, and Waldorf Edition 2 plugin suites.
Waldorf synthesizers have been used by artists including Depeche Mode, Hans Zimmer, Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Enya, Nine Inch Nails, Björk, The Orb, and A-ha.
