Critic Reviews

Waldorf PPG Wave 3.V

soundonsound.com

Waldorf's PPG Wave 3.V is a potent homage to the classic PPG synths, revitalizing their unique sound within an accessible software framework. It offers intuitive wavetable manipulation and an impressive multitimbral setup, making sound design both exciting and efficient. However, the interface can feel clunky, with some small buttons and confusing MIDI management detracting from usability. Additionally, while the synth captures the vintage essence beautifully, it lacks the ability to generate new wavetables, limiting creative exploration. Overall, the PPG Wave 3.V delivers a rich sonic experience, perfect for those yearning for that classic sound with modern flexibility, despite its few shortcomings.

Waldorf PPG Wave 3.V review | MusicRadar

musicradar.com

Waldorf's PPG Wave 3.V delivers a stunningly faithful emulation of the classic synth, boasting improved sound fidelity and flexible effects. The interface retains its vintage charm, enhanced with modern conveniences like detailed displays. New features, such as a Drive function and built-in effects, elevate its usability. However, the lack of user wavetable creation and limited sampling capabilities may leave some users wanting more. While the Wave 3.V is undeniably a step up, it falls short of fully capturing the original's expansive potential, which might disappoint hardcore enthusiasts. Overall, it's a worthy upgrade that keeps the spirit of the PPG alive.

Truly amazing sounds !!

As much as I love analog synthesizers, and just hardware synths in general, I think this is my favorite sounding synthesizer. The sounds are mind blowing, and its just an awesome wavetable software synth. I usually shy away from using software but this is another level of awesomeness that I could not resist. For pure analog bliss I would have to say the Oberheim OB-XA, and the Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 are the two greatest sounding analog synthesizers of all time, with the Minimoog coming in right after. As for digital synthesizers I think the PPG Wave, and the Roland D-50 are the greatest of all time, with the Yamaha DX7 coming in third place. Waldorf offers a free 30 day trial of this synthesizer so try it out and see what you think. The PPG sound isn't for everyone, but I personally love it. PPG purists may not be that excited, but for the vast majority of enthusiasts who don't have 10 to $20,000 lying around for the genuine article, this will do just fine. Thank you Waldorf for this great synthesizer, and the biggest thanks to Wolfgang Palm for creating the PPG wave, and Wavetable Synthesis.

Waldorf Microwave

$139.00 - $1,500.00

high-end alternative

The Microwave was built upon what was the PPG Wave. A digital/analog hybrid in which digitally sampled wavetables are processed through analog VCA envelope and VCF (filter) sections producing a classic and warm yet highly complex sound. In fact, the Microwave uses the same wavetables from the PPG Wave 2.3! In effect, the Microwave sounds like the PPG, which in turn, sounds like synth-pioneers Tangerine Dream. To lower production costs and simultaneously attempt to make it more accessible to more musicians, the Microwave was packaged in a two-unit rack module. It's a powerful instrument in a small and unassuming package. (Written by Vintage Synth Explorer)
