Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

All of these horror stories of musicians playing in church bands. I am not trying to start a fight here and am NOT making this at all about religion and WILL NOT tolerate attempts to make this a religious conversation. I know you have beliefs... good for you, proud of you and glad you made that decision, but a church band is there because the church need Background music. Start a band. Play to be heard. Churches may as well run a karaoke track for the amount they appreciate a band. Sure, I know, you do it for love etc etc, but playing music is one of the greater creatives. You should be able to write and express yourself, talk to and with your audience and have them come to venues and see you play. Ever broken a sweat at a regular church gig? Ever had someone scream out a request or had a crowd cheer after a song you wrote? Way off OP, just sad hearing all these stories of people buying gear with the intention of it being played so low that it is barely heard, with sound guys complaining when it is.

A worship band is their to worship their God and to lead worship for the whole church body. When we need background music, after or before services, we do play a track through the PA.

At our church, we DO write our own material often. Generally out of each service, we get four songs played and one of them is an original. We also talk to and pray with our audience. A lot of modern churches do this.

We also get requests, but not usually while we play. People ask us to play songs they've heard off the radio more often because they know we will play our originals each service anyway. Generally, the song selection is also tied with what the message/preaching/sermon/whatever is for the day. For example, we have a few original songs written based on the book of Joshua. When the pastor is going through this book, we will play these originals more so because it helps link the worship service to the rest of the services.

You seemed to get really defensive over the mentioning of how people are gigging. We weren't sharing our beliefs in the slightest. This reaction was a bit much. If you replaced the word church with bar, it would not have changed the content at all. :/

Rosewood v. Maple Fretboards

I have always enjoyed active over passive, but recently I have had to use my Carvin, which is active/passive, but has a fried active preamp, making it passive. At church, the boards cannot handle the boost from a high end active preamp while playing through my board. It's just too powerful. This last Sunday, the sound guys were going nuts because they couldn't figure out how to turn me down in the house PA. They said they had me all the way down but I was still concert level. They ended up tuning out all the signal they could and it ended up making my bass nearly not there.

Ahhh but blake, when you worship God, you should give him your best. We don't want any Cain's up in heeyuh! I think your best would be an American Elite ;)

Custom is King. Don't let someone else dictate what product you get. In the least, find a model that the company cared enough about to install higher end parts and woods.

Mackie CR3 monitors?

I am against ports with speakers. They allow that gross bass swell, like in rap. If you get the sealed, the bass is more precise.

If I were you, I would get some JBL 8" monitors. So realistic in sound. I only have the 3 inch version and they are still amazing.

Those pesky jazzmen

Often times, those musicians become so famous that they inevitably make a band named after themselves, like Ozzy Osbourne for example. I think it's acceptable to have an artist and a band of the same name. In Max Roaches case, I would say to add all the bands that he recorded and toured for under his bands list.

I feel it's safe to assume there will be no mosh pit at a Green Day concert. Who are they playing with?

The pattern we all seem to be following, I would say it's just going to be re-makes and re-hashed monsters. Universal is making a shared universe, Avengers like, series featuring the 1930-1945 monsters. Dracula, Wolfman, Mummy, Creature from Black Lagoon. I think we'll see a flood of remakes, prequels, and sequels to Nightmare, Friday, Halloween, etc before they go back to the drawing board and start redoing Hitchcock films. It's only a matter of time before they take credit for Hitchcock's works because they made it, "darker, edgier", and all that mess. The 2010's have been dominated by supernatural demons/ghosts.

Even as of late, movies are just stolen ideas from each other. They made, "Lights Out", which was a ripoff of, "Darkness Falls", not to be confused with the new, "Shadows Fall". It's angering when people don't come up with something new.

I'm surprised there have only been a few horror/suspense films that were related to cellphones.

I didn't know people actually talked about this stuff other than my one crazy friend who collects guns and is such a head-in-the-clouds libertarian I can't talk to him anymore. I thought he was part of a really small minority of loonies...

There have always been people who prepare for the worst and hope for the best. All the qwerks behind 9/11 really opened the door for these people to come together. The Oath Keepers are a well known military/law enforcement community that really strengthened during this time. After a year of hearing about zombies, Hollywood's misinterpretation developed into the first 3 large scale zombie movies being released; Resident Evil, 28 Days Later, and Dawn of the Dead(re-make.) This movies were successful due to their budget size, their ties to other large franchises, and the fact that zombie movies were practically extinct for a decade. Now, we are all forced to see and hear about the undead in all forms of media. I think the zombie craze is slowing a bit. It's going to be a nostalgic period for a lot of preppers and gamers though, so it won't fully leave pop culture for a decade or more, I'm afraid.

I'm watching some of Beauty and the Beast: Live Action. It's not impressive. In particular, Emma Watson's voice has no vibrato and sounds super compressed/auto-tuned. Her phrasing of the words is lazy and behind the beat as well.

Disney's constant efforts at social justice and political correctness is actually, noticeably left out of this film and as a history buff, I appreciate that. This is 1700's France. You know, when slavery was still commonly accepted and constant war with the English was the main topic. The Normally, Disney would try to shoehorn in different ethnicities and maybe even add modern vocabulary to make the dialogue fresh and relatable. Not here. A nearly all white cast with exception of the four or five black actors who, to credit the time period, were only in parts of the film that showed them either working/delivery/cleaning or as possible prostitutes in the tavern Gaston sings in.

Aside from Belle's awkward singing and the British accents so many of these French characters have, it seems like a pretty faithful rendition.

I was softly suggesting that I vetted him a little as well and found his youtube and such. He had a deleted video of him playing Uke and I thought it sounded all cool and techy to bring it up.

I never liked the zombie craze; I knew where it really came from. It re-surged due to conspiracy theorists and doomsday preppers. When these people would go online and converse why they needed certain types of rounds or weapons and whether or not they would be good enough for certain situations, they referred to the potential targets as "Zombies". As in, a person who blindly follows orders and is out to get you, not the undead horde. It would be the code word needed to be used for law enforcement, military, or foreign soldiers depending on which theory was believed in and was thought of as being mandatory during these talks due to the NSA and Patriot Act fears. . It became tongue and cheek for some time until people actually thought the undead were back in pop culture. By adding them into video games and movies, they actually forced a dying genre of horror to resurface.

There's now a large number of people who HAVE bought firearms and stores in the name of a fake horror creature.

Next time you stumble across an older forum where they are talking about needing an incendiary Chinese 7.62x39 rounds in case the zombies have level 3 body armor on, you'll know it's in reference to marshal law, invasion, bio-threats, etc.

Yeah, the show has had large ups and large, large downs for me. I've sworn off the show a season at a time, a couple of times now. This season started off awesome and then quickly went into the slow dredge that is dialogue.

They need to just make stuff happen every episode. No more episodes of character building. We have all the characters we need, now we just need the story to progress constantly.

Hello. I am a geartarist. New to EquipBoard from Houston, TX. I'm into videogame music, blues, rock, metal, jrock, jpop, acoustic, jazz, soul, funk, and r&b. I work as a stage and theater tech, as well as technical support. I am an event director for the anime convention San Japan. I also support our local VGM scene whenever possible.

You sound like a good feller to know round these here parts. I live in San Anto for a few years and never heard of anime conventions being there. One of the Alamo Drafthouses would have Anime Wednesdays though.

Welcome.

I am so disappointed and/or angry. I ordered the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. It was so gross. I'll spare the details and keep my blood pressure down.

I rarely make reviews on anything, but the quality of the food forced my hand. When I went over to google reviews, I found that a ton of people have actually rated it as a 5 star restaurant. There's just no way this place could be anyone's favorite place unless it's the only restaurant they've ever eaten at. It's one of probably 5 meals I've ever not been able to finish.

Is UberProAudio's "Who Plays What" section a valid source?

Not at all. Items must be sourced with video, photo, or large scale interview. UberPro allows little to no evidence for submissions. That's another thing that sets us apart.

cheap/simple bass rig

The recent mentioning of Mike Dirnt and picks being preferred for bass has forced my angry exile from this thread. However, I must make one final post.

Jazz basses. P basses. J/P Basses. Stingrays. They all fail in comparison to the JMJ.

The V3 versions of the Fender Rumble have a lot of high end. I play a 500 combo with a 410 added. The older Rumble's have a bit more low end for some reason.

Ultimately, you don't NEED any pedals. A bass and a way to amplify it is the most simple rig. You can find amps that color your tone in ways you like and you can find basses that have distinct tones to them. Beyond that and your actual technique, everything else is extra.

The single, most important aspect of being a bass player, besides remembering to turn on your Pizza Hut sign when on deliveries, is ability to keep time. You don't have to be flashy or super talented to be accepted by most, you just need to be able to play exactly when you need to. I've seen guys who SUCKED at playing bass and stuck to quarter notes, but blended well with the band and were welcomed as a bass player. I've seen amazing, Billy Sheehan/Les Claypool style players who could do things I certainly could not, but could not do it in perfect time. You can play 400 notes a minute, but it's all worthless unless it's in the pocket. Bad tone doesn't keep you from doing your job either. Most other musicians don't even really recognize a good bass tone from a bad one unless they play bass or work well with them. A great bass player will of course incorporate all of this into one, agreeable package.

I get the feeling that this may be the first time you've played bass. You may not even enjoy it. I would love it before investing too much into it.

cheap/simple bass rig

yea ill scrap the verb, I'm looking for a more versatile tone nothing special just sounds good and can fit a wider range of music, i don't want to wash out my tone or have something that just doesn't sound right

Due to you wanting options and being at a crossroads of which tone you want to end up with, I would highly suggest you buy the Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig. It has a SansAmp EQ built into it, a chorus, a boost, compression, fuzz, octaver, and a Direct Out all in a tiny, 12 inch package. I think you'll be happy with it. It's construction is top notch as well. It will allow you to dial in just about every tone you would want to experiment with and it has a tuner built in as well, so if you are on a budget and this rig needs to be bought in sections, it would be the very first extra item I would buy.

9yover 9 years ago

cheap/simple bass rig

Tuner - I recommend the Korg Pitchblack.

EQ/DO - Your overall tonal goals and influences will make the decision for you here. If you want modern death metal kind of stuff, go with a Darkglass B7K. If you want a more subtle, fuzzy tone like some of the RUSH albums, go with a Sansamp Bass Driver. There are a lot options. I currently use a Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig. It gives me a lot of options for just $300.

Volume - Ernie Balls are the Fender of volume pedals, meaning every beginner thinks they are tops. They can work smoothly, but their string design isn't for everyone. I prefer gears to strings that breaks. I would also warn you of the Dunlop pedals. They aren't great.

9yover 9 years ago

cheap/simple bass rig

Well, personally, I'd throw out the idea of a reverb and a fuzz.

You need a volume pedal.

You need an EQ/Direct box.

You need a tuner.

This is all you really need. It'll cost you about $300 on the low end.

Adding PRO feature down?

Contemporary Christian is a sum of many genres; pop, hip-hop, rap, country, rock, etc. I am 50/50 on CCM as a genre. As I said before, I have added people based on what genres they play within CCM. Metal I would fight for though.

9yover 9 years ago

Adding PRO feature down?

I would like to see Christian Contemporary and Metal added to that genre list. All the metal entries I just added as rock. As for Christian artists, I add them based on their sound. MercyMe for example would fall under Rock, Pop, and R&B.

nope

The answer is...

"There is no F in Way"

When said verbally, it can make it sound as if the person is saying, "There's no F'n way." As in, a chicken without wings or legs could not cross the road.

Here's one.
