Jokes

Everyone already knows WHY the chicken crossed the road. You now have to find out HOW the chicken crossed the road without wings or legs.

To solve, take the F out of Feather and the F out of Way.

Has anyone solved, and therefore "gotten" the joke yet?

Being 6'3" and having had a pension for eating mass amounts of cheese and meat, I would dare say mine has to be pretty sizable.

No. It reads, "Slippery When Wet."

The greatest sounding acoustics I've heard in person were either Taylor or Takamine.

The one with kids is funny because Romo is always injured. It's made to look like even as a kid, he was the one with the cast.

Tampons because Tuna Fiesta is the funniest word combination I've heard in at least a couple of weeks.

It's like, "That's what SHE said!" You can use it over and over until the end of time and still get enjoyment out of it, so long as you don't over use it. Even then, it can still be funny.

Indeed. I have been running out of options of take out lately. There is a Long Johns close by.

OFF TOPIC

I ended up eating some Long John Silver's yesterday for early lunch. I went to sleep shortly after and woke up with what felt like the flu.

Just now, I was cleaning my room... no sorry, I need to be truthful here. I was rummaging for leftovers, and I found some fries left over from the box. The first one I picked up had a dead gnat on it. What do you suppose killed the gnat? Here are some ideas I have on them topic.

  1. The amount of fat on the fry trapped the bug like tree sap in Jurassic Park.

  2. The chemical composition of the food and fat it was cooked in was toxic, maybe having cleaning chemicals or such accidentally left in the cookware.

Either way, it was startling. The gnat looked wet and partially digested.

CDs or Vinyl

Records are the best, widely available option. They due come with their cons though.

The price to have a great, 3D setup of speakers, a high end needle, a high end arm, and a high end machine that runs with smooth gears is a costly adventure. The vinyls themselves are the cheapest part of the equation and usually are found for 25-75 bucks to the CD's 5-16 bucks.

I once listened to a few songs off of Metallica's deluxe 180 gr black album, "Faster, Louder, Heavier" on a $10,000 vinyl set-up, and it made my eyes tear up. It was so beautiful and deep. When Lars started off a song with his kick, the kick traveled towards your face and seemed like it was coming from a long hallway towards you. It sounded like each instrument came out of a different speaker. It left an impression on me.

Now, if you don't want to go all in for vinyl, I would suggest just staying with the rivers and the lakes that you're used to. I owned a lower quality record player and about 20 records, but I rarely listened to them because of the hassle as well as the lower quality gear I was using.

My hometown did have any of that. We never really had a crime problem until Hurricane Katrina. Our town adopted 50 families after the disaster and it made crimes rise 500% in the first year. A year or so ago we had our first school shooting. I remember when I was a teenager, the only shocking piece of news I ever heard there was when a woman killed herself in the park.

Last time I was there, there was a ton of trash blowing around on the streets, people walking around half dressed, and tagging on the walls. I'm visiting again in a couple of days and I wouldn't be surprised if the once quiet town looks like a prison rec yard.

I'm 6'3 and with my hand stretched open like the hand of Sauron, from pinky tip to thumb tip is 9 inches. When my hand closes however, the fingers all roll inward and my playable around shrinks into nothingness. I fret my board with my index finger and ring finger nearly exclusively because they are right at a step apart when bent. This is why I generally like small necks on instruments, but due to me playing 5 string so much more now, my preference is slowly changing to enjoy larger necks on 6 string guitars.

Why do I mention this? I do not know. May it benefit you to know this!

New mustang bass?

Pickups and headroom can help a short scale sound better, but Jimmy is right on the money here. If you like the deep, hallway of bass tone, you will want a full scale or larger bass. You length and gauge of string make such a difference.

My buddy in Austin plays guitar for a metal band there and he often plays on a short scale bass :) . He took the Ibanez crossover 6 string and tweaked it a bit, changing the tuning. It's sounds pretty much like an electric guitar. He can get decent enough deep lows on his bottom string, but he can't make the same, lung flattening depth that I can on a 35 inch scale, .140 gauge string through a Spector.

If the size of the bass is too large for you to play comfortably, and therefor keeps you from playing it often, then the example is moot though. It's better to be an amazing player with a bad tone than to be a bad player due to not loving it and not practicing enough.

34 inch scale is pretty standard for basses. I personally don't notice a different in 34 or 35 except for at the first 3 frets. If you get a 5 string bass and play your E's on the 5th of the B, you won't notice the difference either.

Taking affordability, quality, and availability all into consideration, I suggest you get an 80's Aria or Takamine solid body. Both have different looks to them, ranging from the boring figure 8 body of a strat to the extreme opposite end.

Ebay usually has a good selection of both. If you want an experimental guitar to play with and want to spend as little as possible, go get an SX or an Agile from Rondo.com.

Ibanez has become THE affordable, entry level guitar of the USA. $300 will get you something decent, especially if you buy used.

I'd also add that for your first guitar, I think you should get a tremolo on the guitar. Most people disagree because the amount of time taken to restring and tune can make a new player less likely to play:however, learning on a finicky, delicate guitar will make playing on a standard bridged guitar all the easier. On a tremolo, you will have to gain more control over your pressure against the strings, so you don't bend the note off pitch. If you enjoy playing the guitar enough to buy another, higher end model, you may get a standard fixed bridge and you will have a new appreciation for its simplicity.

Gear Purchases

I just picked me up a smoking hot deal. I got an ESP Ltd Eclipse Elite 1 with a case for $600.

So far, it plays great. The string tension is a little floppy for me, and thus made it super difficult to play fast stuff, but all in all, I dig it. It looks pretty in a translucent grey gloss thing. The guitar feels so tiny in my hands after not picking up a guitar in so long. This guitar has some cool features, some of which I am not used to yet. I REALLY dig the battery box in the back. You push it in and a spring rotates the box 180 degrees. So efficient. Gotoh locking tuners. This is my first time dealing with locking tuners. Supposedly, they make it easier to hold tuning longer? I don't see how, but we'll find out over time. The case is really nice as well. The easiest and best feeling switches ever.

The super bendy, low tension strings must be changed. My pick and fingers would push the strings like a half inch before it would let go. I like a high enough tension that the pick practically scratches across the string and the string doesn't move.

I still haven't even un-boxed my visual volume pedal. I opened the box, looked at the prettiness and scratch-less complexion within, then closed it and set it aside.

Best Way to Shop for Basses

I forgot to mention, Peavey's are sort of a hidden gem in the bass community. You wouldn't believe the amount of players that own a Cirrus or a Millennial. I had a Peavey Grind 5 Nat that sounded amazing, but the neck was just too wide for me. If you go the Peavey route, I would suggest you play one in person first.

This first one is a 5 string Thunderbird. You should offer 800 and they may take it.

and this staying in the Gibson realm... it looks nice too.

If you are feeling really adventurous, Blakhart Guitars has been trying to get rid of a couple of basses. They are both 6 string. To my ears, they have a really low and hollow tone to them, the complete opposite of a bright and brittle Musicman.

up to $800 but no more. i'm thinking about a MusicMan or (if it even exists) a thunderbird 5 stringer.

Yes. They call them, "Pollo Cinco" or "Plinkos" for short :)

Seriously though, $800 can get you an amazing buy if its used. You just have to do some digging around.

I'm taking the liberty to stalk around online and will post some ideas.
