Best Way to Shop for Basses

I would say certainly that you shouldn't buy anymore Ibanez or Fender basses unless you are replacing one of those with something else. Ibanez's especially have a global tone. You can get an SR300 and it will sound nearly identical to an SR800.

I looked into getting a Lakeland 55-02 for a while. They are supposed to be really versatile in tone shaping.

I would definitely put you up for a 5 string string as early as possible. It's just too handy to not have and it will take some time to really get used to it. I thought about going for 6 strings myself but, I haven't been in a situation where I played higher than the 24th fret of the G string.

What is your budget for a new bass?

Best Way to Shop for Basses

You need to pick up basses before buying them and they need to blow you away. Don't buy any bass that is under $300 minimum. Also, don't buy any more basses if they sound just like your current basses. If you own a Warwick, get a Fender. If you own a Gibson, get a Spector. There should be a reason for you to have this extra instrument.

My 3 best basses are super different from each other and all have killer tones.

  1. Custom Carvin 5 string JMJ (Has the best feel)

  2. Atelier Z JMJ 4 string (has the most powerful pickups)

  3. Spector Euro LX 5 string. (Looks the prettiest and is so pro)

My new song is ready for Vocals, YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS

I think it's your best work yet. I imagine some high Bono style vocals over it.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas! [Feb 2017]

There could be some feature to mark current gear or rules of adding gear should be more strict. Phil X contains 64 guitars and most of them are proved with FrettedAmericana movies. They give me no info what actually he uses

Very much agreed. For a while, we had people submitting any item ever touched by a reviewer as being "his gear". In these cases, items you know that aren't actually theirs but were just reviewed should be edited to include "#productdemo" in the source so that we can find them at a later time.

Greetings!!

I must say... I don't like that your hunger gets misty.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas! [Feb 2017]

I had a thought the other day. I think we should allow multiple sources and photos to be added to submissions and the items themselves. Have a default of course, but have a sliding thingy to allow other sources to be added as further proof and extra photos of gear. In this, we could put all the different models as well. A submission for an Ibanez 405 could have additional photos showing the different color options and maybe custom versions.

GUITAR STRING IS BUZZING

Your neck is either twisted, or your relief on the neck needs to be adjusted. You're gonna need an Alan wrench I presume.

Look down the neck from the headstock, down towards the body. Does it evenly swoop to the body, under the string, like a rope bridge leading to the temple of doom?

Green Day and Metalica's New Albums

Punk, by tradition was fast, hard and dirty. Stripped back songs delivered with belief and aggression

Fast, Hard, and Dirty are all adjectives that can not be used to describe Green Day, especially what they've made in the last 15 years. Half of their albums now have ballads and soft love songs on them.

Punk came across as simplistic, but the players were not simple and the techniques they employed showed speed, prowess, and a degree of finesse.

Punk players weren't virtuoso's. Many of their bassists and guitarists would simply play chords in 1/16 notes and their hand would literally just strum up and down in the same rhythm. The reason why it was catching on so rapidly was that it WAS easy to replicate, and anyone who wanted to play it could without having to master an instrument, study theory, or even spend years developing the style. I believe this is why young teenagers picked up the banner and ran with it. When you have a bunch of 14 year olds in a garage playing, Punk songs are a good starter genre for them to develop as a team. As a bass player, it agitates me so much to hear people throw Mike Durnt into a list of the best bass players of all time, and with certain crowds, he always is. My cure for all the "best" musicians is to stick them into competition where they have limited time to learn and play another musician's work. Whoever comes out the other end with the fewest mistakes across 20 or so genres and difficulty ranges can claim the title, so if say Durnt were able to play Frantic Disembowelment with his fingers and Alex Webster were for some reason not able to play When I Come Around with a pick, Durnt could be considered the better bassist.

Punk was DIY. Printed flyers, home recorded tapes, hand drawn t-shirts. Hired halls and small clubs with multiple bands on the shared bill. It was what THEY made of it.

That would be nearly all bands that are not signed yet :/

Blink and Pennywise and cohorts were the anthem of skate punk, losing their political voice, discarding any real beliefs and selling direct to the kids. Record companies saw the kids wanting these bands.... how POPular they were, and signed them giving kids wider access to the popular punks.... Pop punk in it's purest form.... If this disillusion of belief can be truly considered to have a pure form.

I would not consider content of lyrics to be the what makes or breaks a genre. Black Metal for instance can be done instrumentally and it still retains it's genre. Punk should be considered likewise. If you were to play all punk music without any lyrics, does it stay punk? Of course it does. Whether or not the band is singing about how horrible they have it as white males living in North America or if they think their friends' moms are hot should not dictate whether or not they are punk. The POP comes from the actual music. Whether it retains it's punk roots in how the instruments are played or if it the play-style was altered to be more acceptable to a young, modern audience.

You can blame two points for kids in the late 90's-early 2000's liking these genre as much as they did.

  1. Due to the skill required to play this genre, an explosion of bands came out during this time, all generally sounding the same, and all with the same look. I think record companies probably put them together as they did with boy bands. If throwing a ball up in the air and catching it was being done while the thrower became famous, they assume it's the ball throwing that is accredited.

  2. The "Edginess" attracted rebellious kids. Wearing a tie with a T-Shirt, parties with no adults around, motor bikes, seemingly random acts of excitement and out of ordinary behavior, men wearing mascara, and uncleanliness. These things seem cool to a child but they have the natural urge to resist what their parents expect of them, which is to be clean, well behaved, and intelligent. Seeing a group of people professing the opposite is what hooks him.

Green Day and Metalica's New Albums

I never realized it was about masturbation, but to be fair, I never listened to it for very long.

When I think of songs mentioning self gratification, I think of Weezer's Say It Ain't So.

I would dare to say that bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, Product of 4>N(4x-p), and Green Day are not even pop punk. I would consider them pop rock. Their drums beats, which are the most important attribute to a song being punk or not IMO, don't have the main punk beats.

9yover 9 years ago

Green Day and Metalica's New Albums

Are they really considered punk? I don't think they really vibe the same as Sex Pistols, NOFX, or Misfits.

Green Day and Metalica's New Albums

I've never been super into Green Day. I liked a few songs of theirs in the 90's, but I haven't heard anything I liked since then. I find them highly over-rated.

Metallica's new album was a real hit I though. The first CD was like a fusion of Kill'em All, Black Album, and Justice. The second CD was.... eh... a little crappy. Lot's of slow songs trying to be emotional.

Gear Purchases

no clue.

WI wanted to replace one of the green LED's with a yellow one. That's the only maintenance I looked into.

Gear Purchases

They aren't being made anymore. Finding one that is in good shape all around is hard to come by for a small amount. They are going for $500 new and in box.

Gear Purchases

I just pulled the trigger on a Visual Sound volume pedal. It's the more updated version, looks to be in great condition, and even comes with a box. Only $175 plus shipping. I feel I scored. There were WAY grosser looking versions that were unboxed and were ranging close to $400.

You most memorable gig?

One thought that keeps crossing my mind is, "Why didn't I ask him to name a song he wanted to hear?" That would have been easier for me I think if he named something he liked and maybe was easier to play.

9yover 9 years ago

You most memorable gig?

I just had the WORST gig of my life. I played for a professor's class a couple of days ago. I was given 2 days to learn 30 songs and play 2 familiar songs. Everything went great until the end. During my introduction, I explained my musical background and that I started playing thrash and death metals. At the end of the class, a guy in the back asked to hear me play something crazy. I tried to obliged and totally failed. I started off playing some really fast shreddy scale things. It did not impress I don't think. Then, my skill significantly dropped. I tried playing Anesthesia Pulling Teeth and messed up like 5 notes in the first 20 seconds. I had to stop myself around 40 seconds. Then I decided I'd play a solo I wrote that would be fun and take a good 5 minutes to get through. I bombed. I was so embarrassed. I messed up like 30 times a minute. Again, I had to end the class by stopping, pretending to laugh it off, and tell the class I'm just not on my A game that day. It has really screwed it's way into my heart. I feel like a beginner now.

The only thing that I noticed getting a great reaction was from my voice oddly enough, which I'm not super proud of. I played bass and sang the words to the "Duck Tales" theme. Once I started singing, I saw the faces of a lot of students look shocked and light up. Makes me wonder if I should put the bass gear on ebay and just invest in a microphone :)

Seriously though, the failed playing has still not been shaken yet. I feel incomplete somehow now.

Volume Pedals

the volume control, at least on mine, is not smooth. When it gets nearly all the way up, it skips a few db and gets way louder than the prior bit was. If it were a TV, the volume goes from 0-90, then skips to 100.

9yover 9 years ago

Volume Pedals

Yeah. I was going to ty and save room, but I really dont need that much room anyway. Fro what I can tell, the Visual Sound pedal is top notch. It's not just an okay pedal with LEDs on it; It's an actual top notch pedal with smooth volume control and reliability.

9yover 9 years ago

Volume Pedals

Well, I have about decided to get a Visual Sound LED Volume Pedal. If I cannot find one in great condition for under $200, I'll probably go with the Boss tank.

... That sounds like fun.

It is until you realize to cast a spell, you have to say, "ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL ENTANGLE BALL"

I've done D&D, BESM, Vampire, World of Darkness, Numinera, Munchkin. My heart has 20 sides to it.

9yover 9 years ago

Volume Pedals

Alright. I'm stuck within indecision. I HATE My mini Dunlop. It simply does not work. I know for certain I don't want an Ernie Ball and this is due to the string.

I was leaning towards the Boss FV-500Hl, the Morley series due to it supposedly having the smoothest operation, and the Missions. I've read out site's recommendations and even explored others. My main issue, besides not being able to put my foot down on them before I buy them, is I don't understand electricity. I have tried. I have been told all sorts of different analogies to represent the current, watts, volts, resistance, etc. I don't understand it... and I never will.

That being said, I think ya'll know by now that I use mostly active basses and I prefer boosted, but NOT over-driven/static-y/distorted tones. When it comes to 250k, 500k, 25k, low impedance, high impedance.... what pedal qualities do I need for my hotrod basses?

  1. I need a volume pedal with a smooth action and an even smoother volume control. This above all else. Valar Dohaeris.

  2. If it comes with tricks and whistles, I'm cool with that too. A Wah could be handy to have built in, but not at the cost of the main function. Valar Boomdingus.

FENDER STROCASTER VS TELECASTER

Some guitars just MAKE you play differently. My Atelier ALWAYS makes me slap and play jazzy stuff, both of which I never do normally. It just feels right. It's the soul of that bass. When I tyr to play metal on it, it doesn't feel right.

fender california series guitar cable

Depends. I don't think you'll have much guff from it in a bedroom, but on a stage, I would go for a higher end cable personally. Also, make sure to match your connections. Gold on gold, nickel on nickel, etc.

I personally use a variety of cables, but my favorite is the Lava coil. It stays out of the way and the tone doesn't sound lost.

Also, maybe go wireless. I did, and I'll try to never go back.

I can't find any information about Freeman guitars and basses

Is there any chance you are referring to Freidman guitars? That would be Marty Freidman guitars, formally of Megadeth and Cacophony.

You most memorable gig?

I just got picked to play bass for a church camp for a whole week. So stoked. Some band over booked themselves and ended up needing a drummer and bassist. Furthermore, it's in Albuquerque, New Mexico... home of Walter White. I'm going to take advantage of the situation and totally get me some Los Pollos Hermanos. I've wanted to tour that town for like, 4 years. I LOVE playing for youth. LOVE it. So this is like the Superbowl of playing as far as I'm concerned.

To celebrate early, I give you the greatest song ever written about the town.

JIM KELLEY ORIGINAL FACS 30/60

No, I cannot get a feel for it. The people in the videos talk about the feel when comparing it to tube amps.

This one is a two parter, and they go into some good detail. I've seen others, but this one is easy to remember who did it.
