Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Elektron Analog RYTM.

User experience

  • It's often recommended to use the noise engine for hi-hats instead of the dedicated hat engines to achieve better results.

    Source
  • Owners find the Analog Rytm more intuitive than the Octatrack, especially for those primarily interested in drum synthesis and straightforward sample layering.

    Source
  • Many users enjoy the Analog Rytm's performance mode, highlighting the 12 assignable velocity-controlled macros as particularly expressive and fun.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • The Rytm's sample editing capabilities are described as rudimentary, allowing for basic trimming, normalizing, and using samples as transients or part of a drum sound.

    Source
  • The Analog Rytm MK2 supports direct sampling but with limited controls, mainly start/end point adjustments, bit reduction, and tuning, suitable for layering rather than deep sample manipulation.

    Source
  • The Analog Rytm MK2 lacks internal resampling and has only one LFO per track, which limits modulation options compared to models like the Machinedrum.

    Source
  • The Rytm's analog signal path can color sound, creating a unique character but potentially leading to muddiness without careful filter and envelope use.

    Source
  • The pads on the Analog Rytm are noted to be hard, making them less suitable for finger drumming, but they excel in performance mode for velocity-controlled macros.

    Source

Comparisons

  • The Tanzbar is noted to have a more interesting and less compressed sound compared to the Rytm, which some find too consistent in its tonal output.

    Source
  • The Octatrack excels in sample slicing and processing, whereas the Rytm is more focused on drum synthesis with basic sampling capabilities for layering.

    Source
  • The Modor DR2 is highlighted for its unique features but requires a laminated card for shortcut reference, unlike the Rytm.

    Source
  • The Jomox Alpha Base is noted for having a crisp sound that may appeal to those dissatisfied with the Rytm's hat engines.

    Source
  • Owners often compare the Analog Rytm's sound character to analog gear like the DFAM, but note it's less clean and punchy than a Digitakt or MPC.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The Analog Rytm is intuitive for drum-focused applications, with its sample controls designed to integrate samples as part of the drum sound rather than standalone.

    Source
  • Owners suggest that the Nord Drum 3p, when sequenced by an Octatrack, offers great sound engines and dynamics, providing an alternative to the Rytm.

    Source
  • Despite its challenges, the Rytm excels in creating textural and ambient music, with capabilities for infinite decay on synth engines and reverb.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Sample management on the Rytm can be cumbersome, with users noting difficulties in maintaining sample organization and transferring kits between projects.

Critic Reviews

Elektron Analog Rytm

soundonsound.com

The Elektron Analog Rytm delivers an enticing mix of robust analogue drum synthesis and versatile sample playback. Its standout features include dynamic parameter locks, generous storage, and a well-designed sequencer. However, the pads fall short in responsiveness and feel, a letdown for a flagship model. It excels in sonic potential, particularly when samples and analogue filters combine. Drawbacks include mono-only samples and a lack of loop handling or time-stretching. Despite these flaws, its hybrid nature and potential for future updates, like Overbridge integration, make it a compelling choice for drum machine enthusiasts.

Review: Elektron Analog Rytm | Moinsound's Blog

wordpress.com

The Elektron Analog RYTM strikes a balance between flexibility and performance, offering a robust analogue sound engine and intuitive sequencer. Its hybrid approach and sample integration cater to diverse sonic explorations. However, it suffers from a questionable user interface design, with small, underwhelming pads and a lack of user-friendly controls. While its analogue strengths outshine many competitors, the hefty price tag and limited modulation options may deter those not fully committed to analogue synthesis. Overall, it's a solid choice for those prioritizing analogue drum synthesis and a creative sequencer workflow, provided they can overlook its interface quirks.

A solid feature packed analogue drum machine with pads.

The Analog Rytm is another well conceived instrument from Elektron. I have only had it a short time but so far I am finding that it really does pack a punch. With 8 analogue voices that are optimised for drum sounds and the ability to upload samples of any type along with a range of effects and processing the possibilities are only as small as your imagination. Depressing when the lowest common denominator is your own ability!

Some really cool performance controls using aftertouch on the pads and scene mode helps you easily create variations.

One of my favourite features of the black series of Elektron machines is their sequencer. I love how it allows you to get into micro timing of patterns which on the Rytm can get some wonky beats flowing. This intricacy is something you miss on the machine drum when you go back to it.

This is yet another deep instrument that is hard to review concisely! Worth trying one out if you can.

Superb

Elektron's branded sequencer, combined with an analog engine and the ability to mix samples, provides the most powerful electronic drums instrument out there. And as always with Elektron, thanks to its functionality, we can get not only classic drum sounds, but also melodic percussion and even bass

Best sounding drum box and tons of fun

The Analog Rytm is tons of fun! Combines analog oscilators (called machines) and user samples, runs them through an analog synth engine and has deep integration with it's step sequencer. This thing starts spitting out some excellent sound and rythms. Add in some real-time control through the scenes/performances etc...

Obviously there are some cons: e.g. not all analog machines sound as good as they could, dumping samples into the AR could have been easier, pads are not as playable as MPC pads. And I truly hope that they (or a 3rd party) will fix it one day. But nevertheless these are just minor issues.

The bottom line is: This is the best sounding drum box ever and tons of fun! Expensive but worth every penny...

The Jam

Perfect addition for any live performance. The pads are magical when you set them up with the different scenes and control. The fact you can blend samples with synthesis is pretty amazing and each channel has its own analog filter.

My only complaint is the samples are not stereo. other than that it is a dream drum machine.

paul_walerian_badaszewski

WOW!!

An outstanding sounding drum machine. The kick and low tom are so powerful (the low tom can rival the 808 kick IMO) but its also so easy to create lots of sound fx and rhythmical elements just by messing around.

More than a drum machine

At first blush, this is a solid drum machine, but dig a bit deeper, and you'll be treated to a machine that gives great live performance potential and with it's hybrid use of analog sounds and samples, more than interesting production possibilities.

noize_guerilla_subalot

Most awesome drum-machine I know so far.

This was the drum-synth I was not sure if I should buy it and in the end I was using it the most! Awesome synth, big up and respect to the Elektron-Team, for me it's the 808/909 of the future... From Synths to Drums to chromatic sample playing. You name it it has it!
