BAE Audio (British Audio Engineering) is a North Hollywood, California-based pro audio manufacturer specializing in hand-wired, discrete microphone preamps, equalizers, and compressors modeled on classic British console designs from the 1970s. The company traces its roots to Brent Averill Enterprises, founded by engineer Brent Averill in the 1980s to repair and rack original Neve and API modules. After Averill's retirement in 2008, former employee Mark Loughman took over and renamed the company British Audio Engineering while retaining the BAE suffix.
The company is best known for reviving the Neve 1073 microphone preamp circuit, which they began producing to original specifications using authentic Carnhill and Jensen transformers. Their catalog includes the 1073, 1084, 1023, 1028, 1032, and 1066D preamps, the 10DC and 10DCF compressors, the B15 and 73EQL equalizers, the Royaltone EQ, the Hot Fuzz, and a line of 500 Series modules and racks.
BAE builds its products using point-to-point hand wiring rather than surface-mount circuit boards, positioning itself as a boutique alternative within the vintage-style analog outboard market. Their gear is used in professional studios and has been adopted by artists and producers including Steve Vai, Vince Gill, Tim Pierce, Warren Huart, Simon Phillips, and the band HEALTH.
BAE Audio has 63 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Preamps, Effects Processors, and Accessories. Their gear is featured by 61 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Electronic, and Pop. Notable users include Troy Van Leeuwen, Mk.gee, and Travis Scott. Most BAE Audio products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
