Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about DW 9000 Single Bass Drum Pedal.

Value and pricing

  • Many feel the DW 9000 is overpriced, suggesting alternatives like the Tama Iron Cobra 900, which offers comparable quality at a reduced cost.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • It's noted that direct drive pedals like the MDD have a non-linear power transfer, with the beater moving slower near the end of the stroke, reducing power output.

    Source
  • The DW MCD is praised for its consistent feel across various settings, while the MDD offers drastically different responses with minor adjustments, appealing to those seeking customization.

    Source
  • The DW 9000 pedal's free-floating shaft provides a smooth operation with minimal movement needed for powerful strikes, which some users find too smooth for heavy rock playing.

    Source
  • DW 9000 XF model features an extended footboard, providing extra space for drummers who require more pedal board area during performances.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The MDD pedals, while not exclusively for metal, are noted for slight speed advantages at ultra-high tempos, beneficial for drummers using triggers.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Those transitioning from DW 9000 to MFG chain drive models find the latter offers better power and response when 'burying the beater', appealing to aggressive playing styles.

    Source
  • Users comparing DW MCD and MDD note the MCD offers a comfortable, forgiving experience akin to a touring car, whereas the MDD provides nimbleness and speed like a racing car.

    Source
  • The Sonor Jojo Mayer pedal is noted for its excellent balance and smoothness, often compared to the DW 9000 but at a lower cost.

    Source
  • Yamaha FP9 offers a longer footboard and similar build quality to the DW 9000, but at a lower price point, attracting those who sit further back or have larger feet.

    Source
  • Owners find the DW 5000 preferable due to its balance of weight and resistance, offering more "bite" than the overly smooth 9000.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Some players add beater weights to the MDD to improve power and response, finding it necessary to fine-tune these settings for optimal performance.

    Source
  • Swapping the stock beaters for Tama Accu-Strike beaters can significantly change the pedal's feel, providing a different tactile experience.

    Source

User experience

  • Owners report a significant adjustment period of around 6 months is needed for mastering the heavier feel of direct drive pedals compared to chain drive models.

    Source
  • Some players dislike the DW 9000 due to the internal spring placement, which can rub against their shoe and cause discomfort during play.

    Source
  • Owners report that the DW 9000 pedal is rock-solid but may require regular maintenance, such as oiling and cleaning, to maintain optimal performance.

    Source
  • Some users have experienced frustration with the DW 9000 due to its lack of weighted feedback, impacting their groove and feel, especially at slower tempos.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • It's noted that buying used DW 9000 pedals can entail risks, such as pre-existing modifications that may require professional adjustments.

    Source

Build quality

  • The DW 9000 has been reported to use non-standard parts, complicating self-repairs and potentially leading to costly fixes.

A work horse.

This guy will last you a life time. Durable and smooth. I prefer dw over the tama iron cobras any day. Iron cobra's have a lot more resistance in a weird way. This has many ways of customizing the feel that you're looking for.
