Malekko Heavy Industry Corporation is a Portland, Oregon-based effects pedal and Eurorack synthesizer module manufacturer founded in 2006 by entrepreneur Josh Holley and music industry veteran Paul Barker, the former bassist and producer of Ministry, Revolting Cocks, and Lard. The company's origin traces to Barker's desire to retire his Maestro Brassmaster — Holley and his father, an electrical engineer, reverse-engineered the circuit into a clone called the Barker Assmaster. Demand for the clone grew beyond expectations, and Malekko Heavy Industry was born. The operation moved from Texas to Portland around 2010.
Malekko's pedal lineup includes the B:ASSMASTER germanium octave fuzz, the Ekko 616 analog delay, the Diabolik fuzz, the Charlie Foxtrot digital buffer/granular pedal, the Scrutator bit crusher/sample rate reducer, and the Omicron series of compact mini-pedals. On the Eurorack side, the company produces the Varigate 8+ and Varigate 4+ sequencers, the Voltage Block 8-stage CV sequencer, and a modular version of the B:ASSMASTER — billed as the world's first germanium-based fuzz Euro module. Malekko also designed and manufactured the Roland System-500, a fully analog Eurorack recreation of Roland's classic SYSTEM-100m, and released tabletop instruments including the Manther analog monosynth, the Mr. D analog drum machine, and the BFF 4-voice wavetable synthesizer.
Operating out of Darkplace Manufacturing — a Portland warehouse shared with fellow synth makers including The Harvestman, Sputnik, and 4ms — Malekko has been a key part of Portland's modular synthesizer community. All products are designed and built in the USA.
