Description

Cre8audio West Pest Semi-modular Analog Synthesizer is a compact yet powerful musical instrument that resonates with the West Coast style of rich and complex sounds. This semi-modular synthesizer offers a vast array of sonic capabilities packed inside a bento box-sized exterior.

The oscillator, designed in collaboration with Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers and based on a decade of analog oscillator research, provides a stable, rich, and unique sound. West Pest's oscillator is not a clone or based on any external designs, and is made with 100% modern components.

The synthesizer also incorporates a custom wave folder to shape the sound, adding depth to its already unique sounding oscillator core. This wave folder increases the harmonic content of the oscillator by folding the wave in on itself to create sonically rich waveforms.

In line with the West Coast synth vibe, West Pest features a dynamics controller and an LFO to further sculpt its sound. The semi-modular design means it can work without any patch cables and offers eight different patchable modules with a whopping 18 Eurorack compatible patch points.

The West Pest also supports MIDI in and MIDI thru, allowing it to easily integrate into various setups, making it a versatile tool for any musician or sound designer.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Cre8audio West Pest Semi-modular Analog Synthesizer.

Comparisons

  • The West Pest is favored for organic percussive sounds, contrasting with the East Beast's subtractive synthesis focus.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • Owners use the West Pest for percussive sounds, drones, noise, and to enhance bass singularity, often sequencing with Roland T-8, S-1, or J-6.

    Source
  • Despite MIDI issues, the West Pest functions well as a portable MIDI to CV controller, especially when using CV/Gate.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Users highlight the West Pest's suitability for Buchla bongo and pluck sounds, but note it lacks complex modulation capabilities typical of larger modular systems.

    Source
  • The West Pest includes a unique Pittsburgh Modular dynamics section, functioning as a vactrol-less lowpass gate with added release time, offering control not typical in similar synths.

    Source
  • The synth's pitch CV input is added to the internal keyboard CV, allowing the keyboard to serve as a transposition tool.

    Source
  • The West Pest's attack is inherently clicky, with no built-in smoothing option, suggesting external envelopes or slew limiters for softer attacks.

    Source
  • The wave folder's modulation lacks a CV input for direct control, with users suggesting different LFOs or envelopes to address perceived modulation weaknesses.

    Source
  • The synth includes an audio input for running external signals through the wave folder, praised for its quality despite limited modulation control options.

    Source

User experience

  • Some owners find the ADSR controls sensitive, requiring careful attention to attenuators to avoid drastic sound changes from minor adjustments.

    Source
  • Users find the ABS plastic casing advantageous for portability, as it's resistant to cracking and denting compared to metal.

    Source
  • Owners report a learning curve with the sequencer and hidden features, emphasizing the importance of deep exploration for maximizing the synth's potential.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • If prices drop to around $550, it's considered a strong purchase compared to building a modular equivalent, which could cost triple the price.

    Source

Setup and maintenance

  • Owners have experienced MIDI interface issues, including random stuck notes, with a firmware update suggested as a potential fix.

    Source
  • Some users find the internal LFO modulation on the wave folder lacks impact, noting it becomes inaudible unless the wave knob is at 100% right position.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The West Pest's tracking may require calibration using a 16/16 Eurorack cable, which isn't commonly available.

Cre8audio West Pest dynamic synth review

moltenmusictechnology.com

The Cre8audio West Pest offers a thrilling dive into west-coast synthesis, delivering unique soundscapes that challenge conventional synth norms. Its wave folding and innovative Dynamics Controller invite adventurous exploration, resulting in a brash yet organic tone. However, the absence of traditional envelopes may leave some players feeling bewildered, as the interface requires a learning curve to fully grasp its potential. While the West Pest excels at producing captivating and unexpected sounds, it might not cater to those seeking straightforward synthesis. Overall, it stands out as a bold, intriguing instrument, perfect for the curious musician willing to experiment.

East Beast and West Pest review: Affordable intros to the addictive world of modular synths

engadget.com

Cre8audio's West Pest synthesizer offers an adventurous take on modular synthesis at an unbeatable price of $250. While its playful design and fun features invite experimentation, the build quality can feel a bit flimsy, and navigating its functions might frustrate those who prefer straightforward interfaces. The sound is impressive, especially with its unique oscillator and filter capabilities, making it ideal for creative soundscapes. However, the reliance on external controllers for optimal performance and a limited sequencer may deter purists. Overall, it’s a fantastic entry point for synth enthusiasts willing to dive into exploration over ease of use.

Cre8audio West Pest review | Juno Daily

juno.co.uk

The Cre8audio West Pest offers a tantalizing taste of West Coast synthesis at an accessible price, blending simplicity with surprising depth. Its intuitive design allows both novices and seasoned synth enthusiasts to explore unique soundscapes through additive techniques. However, the absence of traditional subtractive features may leave some users longing for more familiar controls. While it may not replicate the exact spirit of high-end Buchla synths, it stands out with its hands-on usability and patchability, offering a creative playground for ambient and techno enthusiasts. At just over £200, the West Pest is a compelling entry point, but be prepared for a learning curve as you adapt to its distinctive sound design philosophy.

Cre8audio West Pest Review: A West Coast Analog Synth That Packs a Punch For Its Price

magneticmag.com

The Cre8audio West Pest delivers impressive versatility and rich sound at an unbeatable price point of $250, making it a standout choice for budding synth enthusiasts. Its semi-modular design encourages experimentation, and features like a powerful sequencer and wave folding add significant depth to its sonic palette. However, the learning curve can be steep, especially with some controls like the Resonance knob lacking clarity in their function. nice

very fun to play and makes very out there sounds, the wave folder is really fun to use and although it is pretty shit for composing the sequencer is fun for improvisation and messing around, I dislike how it doesn't have an envelope that can be patched into a different filter or VCA though, banger over all
