Description

The Peavey AT-200 is not just an electric guitar—it's a revolutionary tool for musicians seeking precise tuning and intonation with minimal effort. Thanks to the innovative Auto-Tune for Guitar technology, achieving perfect pitch is as simple as strumming your strings and pressing a button. This groundbreaking feature allows you to explore alternate tunings effortlessly, whether you're aiming for an open G or a baritone sound. Simply hold a chord or barre a fret, and let the technology do the work.

But the magic doesn't stop there. The AT-200 also incorporates Antares pickup modeling, granting you access to a wide array of tonal possibilities. Transition seamlessly from vintage dual-humbucker warmth to crisp single-coil brightness, all while maintaining full control over the modeled pickup's frequency response for tailored sound shaping.

Built with a solid basswood body and custom humbucking pickups, the AT-200 stands strong even without its digital enhancements. The guitar's string-through-body design ensures impressive sustain, and the 25.5" scale neck offers a familiar playing experience. For those who prefer a more traditional sound, the active system can be disengaged, allowing you to enjoy the passive pickup tone. Whether you're a studio owner or a live performer, the Peavey AT-200 is a reliable companion that guarantees pitch-perfect performance every time.

Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about peavey at-200.

Build quality

  • The 3-way pickup selector can be scratchy under high gain, indicating minor hardware imperfections.

    Source

Use cases and applications

  • The guitar performs well in low tunings like Ab Standard without altering string gauge, maintaining tension and playability comparable to standard tunings.

    Source
  • Its ability to mimic a bass guitar sound has been described as convincing enough to fool listeners in studio recordings.

    Source
  • Ideal for studio use due to its versatility and quick tuning changes, though suitable for live performances as well.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Offers virtual capo, baritone simulation, alternate tunings, and custom tuning presets, enhancing creative possibilities.

    Source
  • Users note the system can flatten subtle vibrato but otherwise maintains playability, even correcting minor intonation issues while allowing natural string bends.

    Source
  • With the Complete Pack, multiple tunings can be combined for custom configurations, such as D drop C by fretting specific notes on the B and A strings.

    Source
  • The Complete Pack software allows instant tuning changes by fretting and plucking one note on the A string for various tunings, including Drop-D and Bass Split.

    Source
  • The Peavey AT-200 can emulate single coil, humbucker, acoustic, bass, and 12-string guitar sounds, providing a versatile range of tonal options in one instrument.

    Source

User experience

  • After firmware update to version 3.0, vibrato and palm muting performance improved significantly, aligning closely with expectations of traditional playability.

    Source
  • The Variax lacks the AT-200's ability to convincingly emulate a bass guitar, with comparisons hinting it sounds like a standard guitar through an octave pedal.

    Source
  • Owners appreciate its ability to inspire creativity through unconventional tuning mistakes, leading to unexpected songwriting avenues.

    Source

Mods and upgrades

  • Owners strongly recommend the AT-200B breakout box for MIDI connectivity and to power the guitar, eliminating the need for battery reliance.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • The software upgrade enables reference pitch changes using an iPad app, allowing for non-standard tunings like A443 and A447, enhancing customization capabilities.

    Source
  • The AT-200's Antares auto-tune technology allows for solid tone intonation, but it's been noted that the Antares ATG-1 pedal, which complements it, is discontinued.

    Source

Comparisons

  • Unlike the Variax, the AT-200 offers both auto-tune and intonation adjustments, making it distinct in its feature set compared to similar guitars.

    Source
  • Plays similarly to a Yamaha Pacifica, praised for its action and low frets, making it feel more premium than its price suggests.

    Source

Value and pricing

  • Second-hand units with a breakout box and complete software package can be found for around £200, highlighting its affordability.

It should also work as a normal guitar, it fails to do so.

Before pedals could do the trick, you'd have to have many guitars in order to play different tunings in the same set - string caliber is a big issue on this subject, so playability gets thrown the door. I looked for ways to solve this. I came up with this guitar, most of its features I didn't need, decided to give it a try. It was a showroom model with all software features, a bit of wear but mint. The neck feel is below average given the price at the time. Access to the frets was better than expected. Midrange as specs is concerned. On software it did as advertised, there was some small issues with vibrato but nothing major, you'd never notice in a live situation. Really good, honestly I liked it. My issues are that you just can't properly set it up as a normal guitar. At best you can adjust the neck truss rod. But saddles? Forget it. I don't know if it was just me but, if you adjust their height or intonate. If you do the auto tune system, the piezo doesn't respond and the string just sounds dead when you plug in. It made your playing experience, feel wise, absolutely miserable. So you either adjust it and lose the software features - which is the selling point - or you play it as is and deal with it. I'd give it 1 star, but I like it, it's a nice guitar. A nice guitar that got replaced by a hundred-dollar pedal. I plan on gutting it and set it up properly.
